No, the market is picking winners. But big government liberals like yourself hate the market.

I have neither the time nor inclination to provide a course in basic economics here.

There are no companies making consumer goods in sufficient volume to be competitive. The logistics chain simply doesn't exist here anymore, and the market of the rest of the world will be much more profitable than focusing on the US market.

Chinese slave labor isn't used in electronics manufacturing. Have you ever been to a factory in China?

I was referring to American made products sold in America.

I think what he is saying without realizing it, is that he wants our government to be more like China's.

US carriers have had no good defense to improving missile technology for decades. Russia introduced the sunburn anti ship missile in the 90's. This is a supersonic sea skimming missile. It is only detected by the carrier (such that actions can be taken) once the missile breaks the horizon giving the ship roughly 45-50 seconds to react. At that time we had no good defense.

While the battle group may luck out and take out one missile - there is no good defense against numerous salvo's of such missiles. The defenses get overwhelmed.

That is against the old stuff. Improvements to this technology ONIK's and so on increased the speed of these missiles reducing the reaction time down to less than 30 seconds. These later models are stealthy and smart - making evasive maneuvers prior to impact.

Russia started working with India decades ago (along with China) on missile technology. India's version is called the Brahmos.

The latest innovation with respect to missile technology is the hyper-sonic missile. These have now been deployed by Russia and India has already conducted successful tests of it's hypersonic variant.

There is also no good defense against China's DF - ballistic missiles.

Our carriers are sitting ducks against the missile superpowers. This does not much matter as we are not getting into a fight with Russia/China/India anytime soon I don't think.

Does anybody honestly believe there will be a big Naval battle someday again?I really don't see it happening the Internet makes everything too transparent

Really I think Al gore's highway has made warfare as we know it from the past as obsolete

As soon as anything happens on this planet everybody knows about it almost
    Instantaneously

I’m sure your argument would be based on the false belief that US manufacturers would hire lots of Americans workers rather than using cheaper and more efficient automation.

No one is forcing American consumers to buy Chinese goods. The market is making that decision.

    Of course it is

There are degrees of employee treatment

Some like north koreans are virtual slaves

Others are merely overworked and underpaid

Such as the toxic chinese sheetrock?

Consumers freely chose to buy that product also because it was cheaper than the quality American brands

The federal government has the authority and responsibility to manage trade

And a $350 billion trade deficit with china is bad for America

It's about Taiwan, China doesn't have any desire to get involved in random conflicts or even a conflict with the US (or Australia) however it is clear they are very determined to reunite Taiwan with China. In my opinion Taiwan would make a really good "soft landing" for China's ailing economy. The militarised islands is part of their "reunite Taiwan" strategy (in addition to securing the trade route and the natural resources in the SCS), these threats they are making carry far more weight when taking in context of Taiwan, it would be a mistake to dismiss them.

Because Americans who already operate on very thin margins need to pay more for their goods?

    Yes.

No, not any weapon. The Chinese can achieve local naval superiority through use of almost entirely missiles... temporarily.

Missiles and satellites are closely connected technologies. You can bet that the United States, Russia, China, and maybe a few other countries are working on (and have) technologies to track and destroy rival satellites and missile installations.

One of the developments that is going to contribute to a higher frequency of war going forward is the significant first-strike advantage satellite-missile warfare entails. The bad news is that war will become more common, the good news is that countries will surrender sooner and with fewer casualties.

Why not pay more if it is necessary for the economic health of America?

Being a vassel state of china is far more harmful than paying a little more for that iPhone

1- Because when you have to pay more for everything you buy less. When you buy less the company goes broke and lays off it's employees. So now they can't buy anything.

2- When your company has to charge more for the same product that is made in China (or Vietnam) your company can't sell it's stuff to the rest of the world and it goes broke and lays off all it's employees. So they can't buy anything.

The thought of buying less from china does not bother me

    Being a banana republic does

Everything we buy from china now used to be made here by Americans

    Or not made at all.
I don't know how old you are, but I can remember what I paid for my first computer and I'll tell you what. With inflation 3/4 of America would not have a computer. But the rest of the world could still buy one for $499.

The cost of computers has declined more due to technology than cheap labor and zero pollution controls in china
