Condoleezza Rice, the former US Secretary of State under President Bush would have made a great president of the USA and still may do, perhaps if she runs in 2012 but until then we Europeans should give Condi a wee shot of being President of Europe. If she is elected US president, she can decide if she wants to be president of both the EU and the USA or just the USA.

Can an American become the President of Europe?

Why not?

Europe does not have closed borders - no-one has set up a new iron curtain have they? People come from all over the world to study and to work in Europe. I have Indians living to my left, right and above me and most welcome they are.

If you have skills anywhere in the world, Europe has a job for you - this is true in the private and public sectors, so what's the problem?

It would be stupid and self-harming not to hire the best in the world for Europe's MOST important job, president of the EU and Condi is the best, so hire her.

How hard can it be to make Rice a citizen of a EU member country if that was the rule? After they captured him in WW2, the Americans made Wernher von Braun the German rocket scientist (who was working for Hitler trying to bomb us all to hell) an American citizen didn't they, and so got to the moon? So what matters is if the foreigner has the skills that your union needs.

Citizenships can be granted if required I suppose.

There is supposed to be a new EU constitution - I think they call it "the Lisbon Treaty" or something. Has anyone here read it? I have not but The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union looks good and I didn't see anything in there about "Americans not welcome".

I know the US constitution says you need to have been born in the USA to become president, though not to be elected a state governor. Well Europe should improve upon that rule.

I admit it is a campaigning poll, supportive of Rice.

You could I trust run a poll which supported your candidate or which opposed Rice - I may have a view about your poll but I would support your right to run your own poll in a fair forum. It is fair if we all get to run our own polls.

Unfair? If you think that poll is unfair you should have a look at the "fairness" of the non-election for head of state of Britain or Scotland.

The Queen is not elected by the people nor by the elected representatives of the people - she is just there - imposed by the kingdom.

We get imposed upon us Queen Elizabeth as monarch and no election for president and no constitutional rights whatsoever in this kingdom.

The only thing which is ever fair in countries without democracy is when a monarch or dictator swings on a rope like Saddam Hussein did. (Chopping heads off is quite fair too)

However, I am not in any kind of personal relationship with Rice (no surprise there then ) so I am not obliged to support "Rice-as-my-partner" for President, of Europe, of America or of anywhere.

Unlike when Bill Clinton supported his wife for US President, I am not compromised. It is not a case of "Oh he would say that".

We all love many people but serious people are highly selective about whom they recommend for president and I am highly selective.

The constitutional restriction on who gets to be US President disadvantages only the Americans if anyone. Therefore, although I might "tut, tut" that part of the constitution as I might other parts, I would leave campaigning for change to others.

But actually I am supporting Condoleezza Rice for US President and have done for years and I am the group owner of Rice for President Yahoo Group. Shame you didn't mention that.

What makes you think I would be looking for a European to become the next US president? I support Rice and even if she becomes "a European" for becoming president of the EU purposes she would still remain an American by birth and eligible to be elected US President under the constitution.

Rice already has two continents to her self-description "African American". So why not add a third continent and make that "African, American & European" or something?

So it is strange that you are thinking that I might be looking to change the US Constitution when my complaint about it is purely theoretical.

It is not like the Russian Constitution which apparently we are told disallows Russian criminals being extradited abroad to stand trial for crimes they have committed abroad. For example, and urgently, UK authorities have requested the extradition of Lugovoy for the murder of Litvinenko in London.

In the case of the Russian Constitution yes I am looking for a change there to permit murderers to face justice. I have no faith in UK justice so I am also looking for changes there (revolution to overthrow the kingdom and establish republics for the British nations, such as the Scots) so it is not as if I am 100% behind the UK state and 100% against the Russian state or anything . No I am more balanced than that.
