It turns out the Corona virus isn't living up to the hype.
An editorial published Friday in the New England Journal of Medicine speculated that the coronavirus currently causing panic in world markets could turn out no worse than “a severe seasonal influenza” in terms of mortality.

Citing an analysis of the available data from the outbreak in China, the authors note that there have been zero cases among children younger than 15; and that the fatality rate is 2% at most, and could be “considerably less than 1%.” Those who have died have been elderly or were already suffering from another illness — as with ordinary flu. The underlying data suggest that the symptoms varies, and fewer than one in six of the cases reported were “severe.”

The authors note that coronavirus looks to be much less severe than other recent outbreaks of respiratory illnesses:The overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 196 rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively.

The vast majority of patients recover, and among those who are hospitalized, the median stay thus far is 12 days. Coronavirus, they note, does spread easily, and the average infected person has infected two other people. That means the U.S. should expect the illness to gain a “foothold.” But they note travel restrictions on China (imposed by President Donald Trump over the objections of some critics) “may have helped slow the spread of the virus.”

This nonsense is beyond irresponsible. The Corona virus has produce more deaths than SARS and MERS combined.

But you say this because it "pleases" your leader.

It's as absurd to panic or to overhype as it is to downplay the dangers. We just need to prepare.

The reason the stock markets fall is because people can't trust anything that Trump says. Even if the dangers weren't great. Even if what you say is true, people are not going to believe it. Because you guys have a very bad history of conflicting with the facts.

This is why we should never have a pathological liar in power.

The reason the stock market has fell is because many companies lost their supply chain because of closures in the infected areas.

Anybody who has ever managed a business knows that supply chains are something that can be dealt with. But they need accurate information to know how to deal with it. For example if, as Trump stated, the number of cases in the U.S. would be in single digits and "close to zero" by next week, a manufacturer might choose to use their reserves or wait it out. If this were to last several months, they might find temporary suppliers, and eat up the losses. If it were to last over a year, they would change suppliers. More than that and they might think about redesigning their product....

Investors understand that companies cannot make such decisions because the person they would normally look to provide the most relevant information is a pathological liar, and cannot be trusted. And that's dangerous.

As I have said so many times, Republicans simply don't understand the many dangers for this country that an incompetent President* like this one produces.

They can with time. The big difference is that it not the loss of a few isolated suppliers, but numerous suppliers. In the meantime, factories are shut down. Most likely the big losses on Wall Street are temporary for that reason plus the virus will not last forever.

There are already problems with getting some fairly popular cars out of Korea. That impacts dealers in the US and it will get worse.

Well then we'd have to kick every Democrat and more than a few Republicans out of the house. By the The New England Journal of Medicine is one if the most reputable and long standing of such jounals in the country. But I would not expect a leftist such as yourself to accept the science when it gets in the way of bashing Trump.

Yeah, I guess you missed the part where this was written in the New England Journal of Medicine a prestigious and factual publication. You're hoping it's not true so that in some perverse way you can blame something on Trump. BTW your graphic lacks a source.

    No citation?

My guess is that this is the paper in question:

    https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2002032
Clinical Characteristics of Coronavirus Disease 2019 in China

People, READ the original paper, if you want to be informed. Don't read the RW spin of it, which wants to paint this as nothing more than the common cold, to protect Trump.

The RW must be REALLY scared that this virus is going to make it harder for Trump to get re-elected. That's why they are in full-blown spin mode about the virus. Not surprisingly, our resident RWingers lap it up and spread it without critical thought, just the way the virus spreads.

Now, for facts: The paper still puts the fatality rate at 1.4%. The authors state it could possibly be lower than that. Whatever it is, it is going to be higher than the 0.1% fatality rate of the common flu. So, no, this virus will not just be like the common flu. For some people it may feel that way, for others it will not, it will rather be fatal.

Note in edit: Here is another link to NEJM with a perspective:

Here in the USA we have many layers of protection for us folks. Naturally we should protect ourselves as we would do against, say, just a common cold. Our protection layers are the federal government, 50 state governments, county governments, thousands of city governments, all health facilities and personnel from sea to sea. Plus many private sector companies are protecting us. These folks are doing their best. It may not prove perfect but at least they aren't just wringing their hands. So don't panic, do what you can, stay informed from many sources, and don't expect one man in the Oval Office can wave a magic wand. Plus it's a little early to start criticizing. Please don't shout "Fire" in the crowded theatre.

I think most Americans stopped looking to Trump for truth long ago.

The dangerous part now that he's surrounded himself with incompetent, lying toadies who are no more believable than he is. HHS Secretary Azar dropped the ball so badly he didn't last a week as leader of the COVID-19 task force.
    Indeed.

Shame on you for writing this misleading garbage.

There's more info in this one picture than in your dismissive screed.

You do whatever you think. All I'm saying is that downplaying the threat is as dangerous as overstating it. And the OP is doing just that.

That's because we're still looking for the $2500 in healthcare savings we were promised by Obama and breathlessly awaiting the slowing in the rise of the oceans we were also promised.

No time to search for truth until those promises are delivered.

So you say. But you provide no reference. Which, BTW, is a rule violation.

In any case, the Journal is prestigious. But the opinion pieces are just... opinions. Just like NYT and Wapo may be prestigious journals, but that doesn't mean they don't publish Trump's idiotic opinions. You omitting the reference makes this one very suspicious.

So I can only refer to what you post. And what you post is not based on facts. And it's irresponsible.

The market was primed for a correction, anyway. The correction could morph into a rout if COVID-19 disrupts the economy significantly on both the demand and supply side, seemingly the more likely near-term outcome.

We have had only one death in the US. Most likely because of the travel restrictions.

Anything to disparage the president, right? I believe the TDS on this forum is much worse than the Corona virus. Of all the attacks onTrump this is the most shameful but the left has no shame. I believe that all of you are counting on a pandemic to twist into a tin foil hat fairytale that Trump somehow created the virus. Well, you know what, with everything you've thrown at the president he always emerges clean and his numbers soar. So keep piling up the **** it just reinforces what every Trump voter believes and creates hundreds of thousands of new ones. The game was over long ago no, one believes anything coming from the left anymore, not the politicians, not the media or the deluded Liberal/Socialist/Progressive/Communist sycophantic servile masses. Donald Trump is and will continue to be the president of the US until 2025 no matter what you say or do, let that sink in, apparently it hasn't yet.MAGA!!!!

Sorry, but the reason the stock market fell is investors fears- and the level of that fear can be directly associated with the level of panic the media has promoted in it's reporting. That will in turn create tangible problems, but the baseline is solidly in the media treatment of the story. The market is driven 10% by fact, 90% by emotion. Cool heads prevail and win, panicky ones lose.
