Just spent 45 mins on the phone with my oldest daughter....she fears covid-19 will eventually spread to family members and friends.....I tried to reassure her.

Honestly, her unexpected phone call brought tears to my eyes.

A preliminary study of COVID-19 patients in China suggests that those with blood type A may be more vulnerable to the infection than people of other blood types.

In the study, medical researchers analyzed the blood groups of more than 2,000 patients infected with the coronavirus in the cities of Wuhan and Shenzhen. They found that type-A patients had higher rates of infection and usually exhibited more severe symptoms.

While the study’s results are still preliminary, and additional analysis needs to be completed to determine if there is a scientific link between infection and blood type, the researchers have called on governments and medical facilities to take blood type differences into account when treating patients and planning how to stem the spread of the virus.

“People of blood group A might need particularly strengthened personal protection to reduce the chance of infection,” the researchers, led by Wang Xinghuan at the Center for Evidence-Based and Translational Medicine at Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, wrote, the South China Morning Post reported.

“Sars-CoV-2 [COVID-19]-infected patients with blood group A might need to receive more vigilant surveillance and aggressive treatment,” Wang wrote.

The researchers also found those with type-O blood had a “significantly lower risk for the infectious disease compared with non-O blood groups.”
“It might be helpful to introduce ABO blood typing in both patients and medical personnel as a routine part of the management of Sars-CoV-2 and other coronavirus infections, to help define the management options and assess risk exposure levels of people,” Wang added.

According to Gao Yingdai, a researcher with the State Key Laboratory of Experimental Haematology in Tianjin who was not involved in the study, the study could be improved by examining a much larger sample of patients. In addition, Gao noted that the study did not include information on molecular interactions between COVID-19 and various types of red blood cells, which could explain how blood type affects the likelihood and severity of infection. Blood types are determined by antigens on the surface of red blood cells. Antigens are substances that induce an immune response in the body.
Gao also warned that although the new study may be “helpful to medical professionals,” citizens “should not take the statistics too seriously.”

“If you are type A, there is no need to panic. It does not mean you will be infected 100%. If you are type O, it does not mean you are absolutely safe, either. You still need to wash your hands and follow the guidelines issued by authorities,” Gao noted.

 

I think you meant Bubonic plague. That is a deadly disease because it kills healthy people. This virus is nothing like that. The statistics we use to calculate the death rate is nonsense because we don't know how many infections there are. Some people don't even get symptoms so neither they nor the medical community know about them. That is the plain bald truth.

Again, they had changes in government because of what you are saying.

However, that's not an excuse for our late and poorly communicated response.

We've STILL had widely distributed right wing news claims that this is no more than a Democratic plot against Trump as recently as Friday. Given that we had expert opinion in January, there is NO EXCUSE for this administration allowing that kind of information being spread.

And, our president has not only told direct lies, but has ignored the same advice given the country without any justificatin for doing so. His March 8 party at Mar-a-Lago, his refusal to get tested, his lack of segregating those in his administration who were know to be exposed from close contact - such as riding with him in AF1.

Our response has been haphazzard and monumentally late.

 

I just really dig the way the left has co-opted use of the word " Fact ".
What it means is under Obama's reign,there was desperate need to
hide facts from the public.And The best way is to either use Rules for Radicals

The issues you have with Trump can be solved through voting but the China issue is huge and not easily solved imo

 

You can't ask for more than China taking action on this.

One could argue that they did more to solve their problem than we've done to solve ours.

They got rid of leaders who downplayed the problem. We didn't. Will we? Nobody is even considering that!
They rapidly implemented social isolation. We didn't.
They have their new cases down to near zero. We don't.

Do I "trust" them? No. But, I do believe that leaders don't like getting dumped by mishandling emergencies.

The real issue is what WE do.

We can't blame China for what WE do.

The probem here is that this administration has worked to downplay the seriousness of a problem where the actions of every citizen in social distencing is our only real tool.

AND, the right wing has tollerated Fox and others even projecting this as a Democratic partisan plot and thereby countering professional advice of experts both local and federal.

I'm talking sanctions something real not just allowing them to move people around and that be enough.....

Again about the what we do, here's the main thing, if you disagree with this administrations handling of this vote them out. That seems like a much simpler fix than how we get China to never again wait a month to tell the rest of the world about a new virus
