The curse filter is set to delete the "n" word and rightly so - it is a VERY offensive word and one I personally feel is worse than terms which crudely refer to acts of intercourse or other bodily functions.

But I want to make an appeal to the owner and the moderating team that we add the terms

    "Abbo" and "Gin"

to the curse filter as they are the Australian equivalent of the "N" word and should NOT be tolerated

Abbo? You mean Abo? And the problem with some words is that they have other meanings. Gin is an alcohol. Coon is a type of cheese and a surname. Probably bajillions of examples like that.

Sorry - still steaming - just saw one of our purported compatriots on this board refer to the "abbos and gins"

And yes it is more commonly written as "Abo" but that does not stop it from being offensively derrogatory

I think "n word" should be banned. It is clearly an attempt to bypass the filter. Plus, I cringe and shake my head every time I hear or see a grown person using it. Or we could just remove the filter altogether which I think would be a better choice...but I'm just a simple Dago so what do I know.

I think it would be better if you toughened up a bit, but if we must ban those words too, then we have to choose others to take their place.

In my family, the code word "Canadian" is used to refer to (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)s (not black people cuz there's a difference) in a non-offensive way, and it helps to avoid being convicted of a thought crime. "Be careful driving through Cicero because there's a lot of Canadians there."

Another good one is "Mondays." Why? Because everybody hates Mondays.

I disagree. Words should never be censored, not even on PF.

Profanity is different from culture to culture and even person to person. For instance, "Abbo and Gin" sounds like a great drink to me and nothing more. For some people using Lord, God, Jesus, or Allah is profane. The "N" word is commonly used across many cultures, including blacks, even as a positive term of endearment. Charles Dickens and Mark Twain used the term in their masterpieces so would you propose censoring books that offend you? No? Then why here?

If you personally feel a term is profane you are free not to use it and think less of people who do. However, censoring language serves only to stifle free-thought and expression which is never appropriate, especially not on an intellectual board like PF that is dedicated to such ideals.

I can agree with that. It is how words are used which matters the most. If people are polite and friendly, then it shouldn't really matter which words they use.

The ONLY people that get pissed off about the terms ABO and GIN are the oh so P/C tossers. They are terms used in everyday life in the town i live in ( we have a large abo population) and it causes NO PROBLEMS whatsoever.

I don't think racial slurs need to be censored.

If someone wants to embarrass himself/herself by saying the "N" word then let them do it.

The problem here is that someone wants to change the world to suit themselves. Abo and GIN are not racial slurs.

Just because you and your bogan mates don't think it is doesn't change the fact that it is.

ABO isnt, its a common word. Gin is what the ABO'S call their women.

P/C fools opinions and that of the real abo's that live around here is way different...i think i will take the opinion of an abo on this.

just because P/C fools have a bee in their bonnet it dont make it right. The ABO'S and GINS that i live amongst dont object to it but you foolish p/c tossers are...thats the point.
To a large extent its part of what is wrong in this world...people that are not part of a group PRESUMING to speak for that group.

That my mentally challenged friend is something you will never know....
I at least have spoken to some of the ABO'S around town about it...not the pretend ABO'S that have white skin and live as white folk ( until its time to exploit the system that is )

    Yes, they're racial slurs.

You're either being deliberately racist or else you're totally ignorant of language.

It may very well be beyond you to use respectful language - and that's one thing. But to hide and be in denial about the racist words you use is pathetic and makes your posts appear even more ignorant...

If you're going to use those racist words so often, then just admit to being a racist often and sit on that. But to bleat you're not being racist is pathetic.

Disrespecting Aboriginals with inflammatory words doesn't say much for you.

I agree they shouldn't be tolerated.

People generally don't use these words. This is probably the first time I've seen these words used by anyone - and used so freely with such abandon. The first time I saw them, I was stunned someone would be ignorant and stupid to use such words. Because generally NOBODY uses those words. They are offensive and mean words. They are racist words.

Ironically the racist words go with the territory of the nasty things said towards Aboriginals. So not just the racist words but the derogatory message in the posts.

So far there's only one person using those words here. Probably learned from Alan Jones.

Most of the Australians on the forum have the intelligence and sensibility not to use revolting racial slurs against Aboriginals. I think that's a good sign, Bowerbird. :)

    Now - now - people - Should I be offended being called a Limey - a Sassanach b****** - a whinging Pom - an Imperialist dog-swine , or anything else ?

Gawd knows what other choice names the Froggies/Krauts/Wops + our Sep Tank cousins across the pond , call us .

btw - Our coloured friends at times use the N" word to each other - no complaints then ?

Jeeez ! Whatever happened to "stick + stones - breaking bones ............. Huh ?

Let's get back to our school playgrounds - our kids are tougher than most adults.

(my tongue is firmly in cheek ) - wink
