FTR when I stipulated that I don't trust Libertarians it is worth noting that the OP himself admitted to liking them in post #170 above/
Why are you against a Convention of States as prescribed by the Constitution? I thought you were from Germany?
You must have me confused with someone else. I stated my reason earlier. I just don't trust the motivations of libertarians who are trying to subvert our Constitution.
With a convention we are all to likely to wake up with President Trump as president for life thanks to the Russian hackers.
You have no idea, so mindjer own damn bidness. It's hard enough enlightening Americans about this. Don't waste your keystrokes on people from the world's nether regions.
No, actually, there is more chance of that in Congress today. Our country is being taken over by foreign businesses who are able to lobby Congress, but do not have to report their lobbying efforts. Wasn't the idea for the people, you and me and all other citizens to tell them what we want, not some foreign business? I'm not looking for an answer. This stuff is true. It's nearly unbelievable. They want to give us our power back in a Convention of States Action.
Foreign corporations owning GOP congressional representatives only came about because the REPUBLICAN appointed majority on the Supreme Court made the egregious decision equating spending exorbitant amounts of money on campaign contributions with freedom of speech in the Citizens United decision. That is going down in the history books as one of the worst decisions of all time.
YES, YES, YES, and even if the only thing we got out of it was term limits it would be worth every penny spent on such a thing. We have too many people that enrich themselves on the backs of taxpayers, both parties.
I voted no. While there are things I would like to see tweaked I do not have faith in the current political leaders to do them. Since everything is on the table the possibility of losing key rights is to great of a risk. Out current Constitution when combined with individual state Constitutions provide a excellent framework for our country. One that I am conferrable with. Let Nancy Pelosi and Paul Ryan get their hands on our rights and who knows what we will end up with. Not to mention when Trump gets his say!
So what makes you think any of them would have anything important to say about a Convention of States?
I think they wield immense power in the political apparatus of America and to think they would NOT have a say is delusional. People like the Bush's, Clinton's. Obama's, and Kennedy's, established political families will also have a large voice because of the power of access, money, and connections.
I voted no because we are nowhere near the need for a convention. We have not exhausted other avenues, nor is there any type of national consensus to drive for a convention to have any success. Having a convention without enough popular support for any particular reason would diminish its real purpose and destroy the possibility of ever having one in the future...
Only if the first thing to happen is the current constitution is immediately repealed in toto and only the states that ratify the new constitution are party to, and thus bound by, it.
Do your state legislatures have people from different parties then the Republicans and Democrats? Because if not then these national parties wield just as much influence among local politicians as they do in Washington D.C.. The party's control the flow of money from the major donors, they have the call lists and voters lists. This is not 1775, these party's are intertwined at every level of the process.
Two problems: 1. Citizens have better access to their state legislators than to anybody in DC. 2. Trump got elected despite all that influence.
Better access perhaps but not the Millions of dollars. Trump should put you on notice that no one knows what will happen. All in all I dont like the idea of playing Russian Roulette with our bill of rights. No one knows what would happen, but right now we do know some things. Our basic rights are spelled out very well at the moment. Once the current batch of corporate paid stooges get their hands on them we could end up with anything.
That won't stop a grass roots campaign, and this is as grass roots as it gets. I know what won't happen: a repeal of the BoR, or any amendment therein. And a fat lot of good it's doing us. So just makes you think the noncorporate paid stooges who already have their hands all over them would relinquish them to corporate paid stooges?
You know huh? You know the hearts of men and the size of the donors wallets? Man you know you want change, but you have no idea what that change will be. Once it gets started EVERYTHING is on the table.
