Didn't say it was black Americans. I wouldn't have been able to marry my wife in 1940 because she is an American Indian. You really are fixated on right wing talking points, aren't you (not a question).
Mixed race marriages were happening in the west throughout the 20thC. They weren't common, but they most definitely weren't illegal in most of the world (the western world, that is).
But see.....you called it "gay marriage". I would prefer they not use the term "marriage"....but let's not confuse the children. There is a big difference. I know there are churches that sanction "gay marriage".....but they are not followers of Christ by the tenants of the Faith.
If they pay for their wedding themselves, do not force someone to wed them and do not ask for special rights, I am all for it. Marry whomever you want. I could not care less.
There are also churches that marry women who aren't subservient...like the tenets from the Bible. I heard there are some churches that will even married sinners who shop on the Sabbath
I'm fascinated by how many people have suddenly decided that government should have no role in licensing marriage. Didn't hear that sentiment a lot when marriage was just restricted to man+woman. I voted yes. Went to a rally of 15-20,000 on the weekend in support of Same Sex Marriage. Should have happened here a decade ago.
Government licensing of marriage was o.k. until it decided to redefine it. By redefining it, it went from honoring a sacred institution between a man and a women protecting and honoring their offspring, to an "anything goes contract". In other words, it dishonored marriage by it's time honored definition. Government can do whatever it will....it is a reflection of the culture. The Church will continue to honor the union between a man and a women and from that will come family.
I love when bible thumpers pick and choose. The condemn the sins they don't commit and forgive the ones they do. Then there is this section from 1 Timothy chapter 2: Also that women should adorn themselves modestly and sensibly in seemly apparel, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly attire but by good deeds, as befits women who profess religion. Let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness. I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men; she is to keep silent. In Ephesians 5:22-24 we find this: "Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything."
Did it dishonor marriage when they made interracial marriages legal? Marriage isn't about offspring....it's about commitment and love
You need to stop taking everything personally and stop looking for conflict wherever you find it possible. I know where you are trying to push this, but you are not going to succeed because you are all wrong about where I stand. Nowhere in my post did I claim anything about homosexuals having special rights today. Only did I express my opinion that gay-marriage is acceptable as long as their right to marry does not infringe on, say, a church's right not to wed or a bakery's right not bake the couple a wedding-cake. I primarily believe in negative rights.
Abrahamitic marriage, according to the books, is a holy alliance between man and woman. So, it is understandable why some Christians would oppose gay-marriage.
I think gay and straight folks should both keep the govt out of their marriage. Vow to love and be loyal to eachother in front of a holy person and all your friends and family and have a big party and even write and sign a document if you want. But leave the courthouse, judges and the bureaucracy out of it.
I hate to hedge, but I support gay marriage and also support my religion's prerogative to reserve the term "matrimony" to one man, one woman. There are too many gays who have distinguished themselves in public and military service for me to deny them the right to marry their same sex partner. It would have been better all around if they had instead emanded that civil unions be allowed and respected under the law.
They tried that. Several states passed laws specifically preventing civil unions from having the same benefits as marriage.
Any great nation from antiquity and on will encourage a union that that provides the healthiest building block for its future. It's really not about the adults. It's about our future adults. A society should care how our future children are being raised and should encourage the best situation.
Then they don't have to have a gay marriage. The Bible also talks about slavery, the Bible always talks about women being subservient. The Bible also talks about stoning etc. Perhaps the Bible needs to be updated. How would you like to go to a Doctor Who uses a book printed 100 years ago?
,maybe god did create Adam and Steve to control the population. Adam, was only a rough draft...it got perfected with eve.
