Unless you’re Trump. Then you just order your people to ignore them in the expectation that the GOP lickspittles in Congress won’t enforce the law.

Which is how Trump skated through much of his administration, and why he isn’t getting away with it now.

So was Obama like Trump? He told his staff to ignore them apparently, Holder/Learner. I guess what's good for the goose isn't good for the gander.

'Former Trump aide Navarro ordered to report to US prison this month'

    Source: Reuters

    March 11, 2024 11:04 AM EDT

WASHINGTON, March 11 (Reuters) - Ex-Donald Trump adviser Peter Navarro has been ordered to report to prison this month, his lawyers said in a court filing, which could make him the first senior member of the former president's administration to do so for efforts to overturn his 2020 defeat.

Navarro, who served as Trump's trade adviser, is due on March 19 to begin his four-month sentence for defying a subpoena from the U.S. House of Representatives committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, his lawyers revealed in a court filing late on Sunday.

They are asking a federal appeals court in Washington to pause the sentence while Navarro appeals his conviction. His defense team indicated they would ask the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene if his request is denied.'

No, he didn't tell them that. But Trump did.

You can contest a subpoena, but you still have to appear. Not appearing is a violation of federal law. How do we know his challenge, itself, wasn't partisan? See, that boat floats both ways. You still have to appear, period.

Without subpoena power congress couldn't do it's job on investigations.

You could levy that charge against any police action.

That Congress has subpoena power does not disregard elements of democracy, such as due process, so it cannot be equated with 'gestapo' , that's hysterics.

We find ourselves in this situation because Trump, sensing a government rule that can be exploited since congressional subpoena power has no teeth, told his staff to disregard subpoenas. Whatever Trump can get away with, regardless of rules and decorum, he'll do it if it has a personal advantage to Donald Trump.

Once upon a time, the government consisted of honorable men, that day ceased with the advent of Trump and Trumpism, to exploit any and all weakness in government to personal advantage, putting party over country.

In answering my own question, I recognize Congress as solely a legislative body with no investigative authority or even purpose. There is a reason we have a DOJ. There's a reason we have a judicial branch. Regardless of how I feel about the issues within those bodies, they are the ones that must be entrusted completely with this power.

Any other configuration allows people to be imprisoned for "contempt of Congress" in the case of Navarro for instance, the select committee has broken up and one can argue easily that none of his documents(he was a trade advisor, how much do you really think he knew of the plan?) were material to the investigation?

What purpose does his jailing serve other than to be punitive for "contempt of Congress?" You make the justification of using Trump. It is because of Trump, that all the more Congress must return to its primary function as a legislative body and it must reject the merging of judicial power within itself.
