There is nothing in your quote to suggest that they were attempting to increase the transmissibility and/or virulence of the pathogen.

Except for the fact that they isolated the spike protein which is how the virus infects human cells and put it into other variants of the virus, lol.

I get it. Your partisan bent makes you want to argue the point. But the language is crystal clear.

Yes, the language is crystal clear to every Trump worshiper on the forum. The scientific community does not agree with your expert analysis.

Gain of Function Research - the definition given in the hearing:

Scientific research that increases the transmissibility among animals. Nothing in there about "intent". If you take a virus that only occurs in animals and combine it with the genetic material to make it express the spike protein, you've increased the transmissibility among animals, and specifically, humans. The "intent" of their research doesn't factor into it. Whether they were researching pathways for the virus to have occurred naturally or whether they were creating a bioweapon is irrelevant.

Is there anyone outside of Trumpians making this claim?

Anyone with any actual expertise and knowledge in the science?

Partially rescuing function of a non-functional animal virus to show how a functional human virus has evolved is different from enhancing a functional human pathogenic virus. I am not surprised, however, that you can't see this difference. Or, more likely, you don't want to because you have an axe to grind.

I'm surprised that you're denying it's gain of function. Like I said, intent's got nothing to do with it.

I could just as easily accuse you of having an axe to grind since the language is crystal clear.

You keep describing gain of function experimentation. You think the Chinese military involved with the lab had only a medical interest?

from what I have read, the NIH indirectly funded research at Wuhan and as part of that research scientist did alter the virus to make it easier to replicate them in the lab so they would have adequate samples. What it boils down to is whether one believes making the virus easier to replicate constitutes a "gain of function". Some say yes and some say no.

I did not have sexual relations with gain of function

Well, it wasn't just replication - the paper includes inducing viruses that did not have the spike protein to have the spike protein, which makes it more transmissible.

Has anyone in the scientific community said it was gain of function?

Fauci (emails) was concerned that their funding was going to gain of function experimentation at Wuhan so he knew it was happening. They were looking into the funding. Turns out funding did go to the lab.

So you don't have anything relevant to Fauci lying I see.

Not only did he lie about the funding, he's lied about masks and asymptomatic transmission as well.

I could agree with that. That's not my interpretation of Fauci's actions or demeanor, though.

Having him in charge of the government's approach to the pandemic is even less healthy.

If I were to be excessively generous with the man, the nicest thing I can say is that he's incompetent. But his emails also indicate dishonest, unfortunately.

    Someone competent being in charge.

Studies out now indicate it's not healthy for kids to be wearing face diapers and inhaling their own CO2 all day long.
    https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/fullarticle/2781743

And Fauci admitted early on that face masks aren't all that effective, as well as flat out stating that the bulk of transmissions of COVID-19 were from symptomatic people.
