I tire of australians telling us how great their laws are and why we are fools not to adopt them

Some weapons do make defense easier, and that is one of the prime reasons for owning a gun.

A "bollard" is a large stiff post in the ground, used to block vehicle intrusion or to tie ships to piers. Don't know what this hero was waving around, but it wasn't a bollard, unless aussie slang applies over the conventional dictionary. Perhaps it was a post of the kind used to support guide ropes used to define an area. That makes it a club, brought to a knife fight, kind of a draw. A gun however, turned the trick.
I shall assume that you condemn the police officer for using a gun, when in the interest of fairness, she too could have used a "bollard".

I read the story on this. The bollard man was protecting himself... the policewoman protected everybody. She's the hero.

Only fools dance with the devil on the devil's terms. I think your lady cop did a service to your country. They won't have to spend tax dollars to prosecute or imprison the killer, and he will never offend again.
Mission accomplished, justice served. Meet every murderer with that response, and soon- there will be none.

No I do not condemn the police officer and in fact she has been universally praised for her courage. Btw the guy with the “bollard” was later seen running after the cop toward the assailant with a plastic chair ready to back her up.

Statistically speaking, a gun owner is 13 times more likely to commit suicide/mortally injure himself or a family member than to prevent a criminal act with is gun.

Yep! I have seen that research and it is very very true. Unfortunately so many seem to think a confrontation will play out like it does on TV. I believe in Murphy and even IF I could be bothered to wear a gun 24/7 I can guarantee I would buck naked in the shower when I needed to use the rotten thing. As it is if they broke in while I am showering I would probably be fine as they would be stunned into inaction by my otherworldly beauty :p

Yeah, because of the proliferation of guns in this country we NEVER have mass killing events like this because every single time a good Samaritan with a gun is able to take out the nutjob before they ever get a chance to harm someone.

And recently we found out that the FBI's crime stats left out the big cities. Than means crime is going down where gun ownership is prevalent and crime is going up where gun ownership isn't prevalent.

We already know what my solution is.

There is no reason a civilian needs to own a semi automatic weapon like an AR-15

I will say, that lady had great courage. It takes that to face any challenge like that- and for any good person to decide they must shoot someone to stop them. Kudos to her.
I once assisted a deputy sheriff in a traffic stop, and managed to disarm a rowdy drunk who was trying to pull a large revolver from his belt. He seemed to think the officer in front of him was attacking him. If he had not been slow or I had not been there behind him, that officer could easily have been killed. Every situation is different when confrontations happen, and violence is the last resort for good people. When an officer or for that matter any good person has to shoot to defend life, it's a difficult choice- but often one that must be made in a split second. Surely you understand that the presence of that officer and her weapon saved lives that day, and we can't know how many. It was necessary, the right thing to do at the moment. But police can't be everywhere. When they aren't there and needed- it's up to you to defend yourself.

The laws will not deter people intent on killing, nor will it prevent them from acquiring weapons. It comes down to how many people like that you allow in your society- and how you go about controlling them. A great deal of that is the attitudes and values a society will tolerate. If you negotiate with violent people- you don't control violence. America is doing that today, tolerating too much of it, going too easy on criminals, and failing to have the proper examples of values in leadership. Until it outgrows that, we will have a higher level of violence than many countries. But without question- it is the people, not the guns, that make the difference.

And that ignores the fact that the decision to commit suicide is not the result of having a gun at all. The gun is the choice of means because it is more likely to be instantaneous and foolproof.
There is a factor that is not adequately addressed, which is training. It would be far more useful to train people than to do the registry process so that people who acquired guns were knowledgeable and skilled in handling them. Like most things, the more amateur the person is, the more stupid things happen. Unfortunately, nobody has found a way to cure stupidity yet.

Is gun ownership the only factor affecting crime statistics??

The pro-criminal local governments play a huge part in crime going up. That's why the FBI left out big cities when they did their national crime stats.

We “control” them by restricting their access to high powered rapid fire weapons.
