There is clearly no answer to that question. People will always use drugs. You could make the first offense for possession of a single joint summary execution, and people would still use drugs.

    I know I will :)

Not surprised you'd risk execution just for one more fix.

I'd risk execution for a lot of things: gun freedom, free speech, freedom from theft (if I'm mugged for instance), etc.

I must be addicted to speaking, shooting and being secure in my property  Or I just feel strongly about this sort of thing and you can't admit that because it challenges your agenda. You know, whatever works.

But then you wouldn't be around to enjoy the things you died for.

That's a worse question, because policymaking is where we can make an impact. Everything else is just how it is. Even if we agree that drugs aren't worth dying over, and even if we agree that drugs are horrible, evil, demon substances: The real question is not whether drugs are bad, but whether the policies against them have given us some kind of benefit. The answer is no. So the solution is to scrap current policy, and possibly replace it with something else IF it does more good than harm. People seem to have their neurotic tendency to do something, even if it's detrimental, when faced with a problem. When faced with a problem without an obvious solution, it is NOT better to break your arm against the problem than to do nothing.

Well, I for one, hate druggies. However, the war on drugs has been a huge failure. It clogs up our court system and our prisons with non-violent offenders.

I wouldn't be necessarily against charging a person for drug possession if they are caught committing another crime in order to support a drug habit though. However, just a possession charge alone should not land a person in prison, unless maybe it is possession with intent to distribute. I don't think you should be charged at all for one of the lower level drugs, such as marijuana though. I really don't see much of a difference between marijuana and alcohol, and alcohol is legal. In fact, I would be willing to bet that people are more violent and unpredictable under the influence of alcohol than marijuana.

Being against drug prohibition seems pretty consistent with it to me. Trying to force people to not use drugs with police power is ineffective and inhumane.

Everything that's scheduled all the way down to prescriptions and pharmacy only medicine. Then again, the FDA has a negative on any drug that's put on the market, so presumably there are hundreds of thousands of illegal drugs which are unable to obtain FDA approval. Even raw milk is illegal.

Fortunately I only use caffeine, rarely alcohol. I've only tried marijuana when I was younger, and have no interest in using that or others that are currently illegal. If drugs were legal, that wouldn't change. In terms of policy, I mean no law against the recreational use of any drug. Though irresponsible use, such as while operating a car, would still be illegal.

At the very least, I think it's time they stop trying to punish drug users, and instead put them in some sort of court-ordered treatment program.
Not just for using drugs, but when the drugs become a problem and start messing up their life. Sort of like what they already do with alcoholics.

I don't hear about people being arrested for drugs that often. In fact, we seem to look the other way. And to put marijuana on par with alcohol is not a good argument for making it legal, because alcohol is also detrimental to society.
