McCarthy is dumb but smarter then MTG. they will raise the debt ceiling. McCarthy only care about his legacy, he will not make US default under his watch. If US default, that would be the only thing McCarthy will ever be remembered for.

Unique appropriations to aid an ally should not be confused with the need to reduce over all defense spending. Nuance gotcha down?

One thing that could happen is the WH being forced to take a rough deal with the Crazy and then also have to whip Dem votes to get it passed to avoid catastrophe. So the Freedom Caucus forces a ruinous bargain and then doesn’t even vote for it.

If you think that the defense budget does not need to be increased because of the Ukrainian expenditures, you are engaging in false logic.

They wrote a bill that the Senate will not sign — he cannot sign something that cannot even pass congress.

Republicans are not negotiating, they have given an ultimatum. Biden is still in Washington. Democrats are still in Washington. Republicans have left.

    This is on Republicans

the FED is harming the economy to cool the hot Biden economy, why not let it grow?

some inflation an increased wages would help pay off the debt, the the Republican run fed wants to kill higher wages

GOP only gives lip service to the national debt when they aren't in control of the purse.

This was not a problem the last three times it came up. When asked why President Trump said one of the wisest things he ever said: "because I was President"

This isn't true at all(I do recognize it's Biden and the Democrat Caucus's talking point.). It was raised in 2010(leading to the Tea Party movement), it was raised in 2018(when Trump gave then speaker Pelosi numerous offers, many of which more beneficial than even the concessions that John McCain got on the border issue.) and well, given the kind of vindictive human being she turned out to be, she passed up on those offers. And now, we're here again.

We can only conclude that Democrat politicians(and the voters who are pro democrat) just aren't serious about negotiating the debt ceiling/budgetary issues. Republicans should take the initiative to get a fixed budget passed.

The budget for this year was passed by congress last year.
The fiscal calendar for US govt is Oct 1 - Sept 30.

If the R house wants to curb spending, they do so by working next years budget to reduce spending. Which starts Oct 1 of 2023.
This years budget is already law, to hold this years budget hostage is the work of the R house.

So if we default, it's on the R house. Plain and simple.

That's what they can do for next years budget.
That's their job is to work on next years budget.

This years budget was passed last year.
Any default on payments because the R house won't raise the debt ceiling is squarely on the group that won't raise it to meet the obligations of this years budget.

The democrats are following Biden’s lead. Which is why the negotiations are between the house republicans and the Whitehouse. This is obvious and I’m sure you know this so why are you passing the buck?

If the budget they passed carried the necessary funding then why is it that we are about to run out of money? I suppose the democrats miscalculated? Or the Whitehouse overspent? The fact is they need more money, the house is in charge of that. The republicans control the house and is willing to grant more money with cuts that they obviously need if they’re running out of money early.

Again, when the GOP had control of all 3 chambers, how much did they reduce the national debt by?

No buck is being passed. Republicans need to pass a clean bill as they did when they controlled the White House. Issuing demands for their “hostage” shouldn’t be tolerated.

The US should never negotiate with terrorists

(And before someone complains that I am saying all Republicans are terrorists, this applies only to Republican politicians, and no Republican posters here )

They were elected by the United States citizens to control the purse. And they’re the terrorists or are the ones who were not elected to control the purse making demands on them the terrorists? This logic is amazing lmao

Sounds like Democrats in 2020: crash the economy, so voters would blame it on Trump. Then once Biden comes in office, start opening up the economy, and when people get their jobs back, call it job creation under Joe Biden. Interesting. You think Republicans are taking cues from the Democrat playbook?

The Senate should pass it. For far too long in our country, we have been unable and unwilling to address major deficit issues. If that means pet projects go bye bye, then that's what it means. Why is this country the ONLY country in the developed world that is incapable of addressing its fiscal issues?

Even other left wing countries, have a better debt-GDP than that of the United States. Albeit their economies are smaller to begin with, but at least they aren't drowned in red ink.

Just as Democrats were elected, and they wrote and approved the funding bills. Republicans are coming in after the budget is approved and holding the payments hostage.

They have the right to the next budget, not the one that came before them (you know — when they were fired from both beaches of congress and the White House)

    The twist isn’t working.
This is republicans fault entirely and I hope voters repay them in spades come 2024 if they force their “hostage” to default.

When your team is calling the American financial system a hostage they are on the wrong side.

Thats your opinion but thanks for your admission that that’s what the Republicans are doing.

It’s a start I guess. Just have to show more independents posts like yours.

Show more independents that I am asking if Republicans are trying to crash the economy like the Democrats did in 2020 to make the president look bad.

Sure, have at it. Go show 'em.

The Democratic Senate should pass the Republican House’s bill with zero negotiation right after the right just called this a hostage situation?

Na, Biden should take the clause “The validity of the public debt, authorized by law … shall not be questioned.” to the USSC. At worst he helps destroy the already damaged stacked court even further when they rule 6-3 while buying more time.

There is a growing movement to add more justices anyway so maybe this will help.
