I taught adults and high school students. Most parents have no idea how to motivate students--if they did, our schools would perform much better in spite of the embarrassingly low pay. I taught computer science and I can tell you its almost impossible to hire qualified STEM instructors. Guess why...?

I'm a supporter of school vouchers provided they're large enough to enable a poor family to choose a good school for their child without having to top up the voucher.

My uncle (mother's brother), like my mother, grew up in a home between two junk yards. He retired as a Col. USAF. My uncle (father's brother) went to West Point (1936), worked for JFK and LBJ, and retired as a Major General USA. His mother died and his father was unemployed when he went to West Point in 1932. My mother became a mayor and city manager. My father designed fighter jets. My father-in-law was a Missouri farm boy who became a USAAC-USAF test pilot and retired as a Col. USAF.

I come from a family of people who never quit. Me? I graduated from high school and went to college at 16, graduated from university at 20, ran an auto repair business and made enough money investing I could teach school and not care if I was paid.

My wife graduated from university at age 19. Our daughter is the vice president of a large national bank.

Not everyone has the ability to become a test pilot, design jet aircraft, make general, or become a city mayor, but they can develop their abilities, make a good living, be a good parent and a good citizen. My beef with government-run schools is they don't motivate students.
