We have been in a quazi dictatorship for decades. China has more economic freedom than we do in many ways. Jim Rogers echoed this claim not to long ago because it is a fact. They have more social freedom as well. The main restriction in China is (do not talk bad about the Government). Here we can talk bad about the Goverment all we want but live in a nanny state.
Not only is the above true, when Obama signed Obamacare, someone in the Democratic party put into the legislation a clause that lets Obama create an army that is loyal to him alone. Yes he's becoming a dictator -- if dictators have to be re-elected every four years, get their legislation passed by Congress, have their favorite bills questioned and possibly overturned by the Supreme Court, and otherwise operates within the legal strictures of his office.
Yeah, the complete absence of the rule of law can certainly look like freedom. Until you're one of the little people whose land is seized and given to well-connected developers. Or you have to deal with the poisoned air, earth and water brought on by the near-complete lack of environmental regulations and the rapid building of the dirtiest coal-fired power plants, and have no legal recourse to address it. Debatable. What social freedoms are we lacking that they have?
Point taken. At the same time we see the rule of law deteriorating in this country. The Constitution warped beyond recognition by the Religious right and Left utilitarianist buffoons. China probably was not the best example of "social freedom's". You can however drink a beer while you walk down the street which is cool and drink when you are old enough to be in the army. In terms of most "civilized countries" Pot and Prostitution are two of the freedoms that the government has no business criminalizing. Umm.. Local and State Governments are perfectly allowed under our Constitution to engage in Nanny Statism. The Federal Government does not regulate strippers or bar closing times. Why don't you go take this up with your local city council or State representative instead of whining about something that is completely and totally permissible under the Constitution. State and Local Governments can be downright tyrannical by libertarian standards under our Constitution. If you don't like it, move to a "freer" State.
It is true that "The Constitution" only applies to Federal Powers however, most States have adopted the Bill of Right's into their own Constitutions.
