Israel's hawkish foreign minister is planning a series of measures to retaliate against Turkey in an apology row, including military aid to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a news report said on Friday.

Other planned measures are cooperation with the Armenian lobby in the US in its efforts to win recognition for Armenian claims that 1.5 million Armenians were victims of a genocide campaign in the late Ottoman Empire during the First World War years and to issue a travel warning urging all Israeli military veterans to refrain from traveling to Turkey, according to the report in Yedioth Ahranoth. The travel advisory will also urge Israelis to refrain from boarding connections in Turkey, the report said.

The planned measures apparently came out of a meeting attended by senior Israeli Foreign Ministry officials on Thursday, which the report said was held in preparation for a meeting on Saturday that will be attended by Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, a harsh critic of efforts to restore relations with Turkey after Ankara announced a set of sanctions against Israel for its refusal to apologize for the killing of eight Turks and one Turkish American on an aid ship trying to break the blockade of Gaza on May 31, 2010.

Accordingly, Lieberman insists that the Israeli efforts should focus on ways to respond to Turkey's sanctions, not formulating an apology for the 2010 incident, because what Turkey is interested is not an apology but exploiting the dispute with Israel so as to boost its regional standing.

Saturday's meeting will reportedly focus on those ways to respond to Turkey.

The Turkish government announced last Friday that it downgrades diplomatic relations with Israel and suspends military agreements. It also promised to take measures to ensure freedom of navigation in the eastern Mediterranean, where the 2010 incident took place, without elaborating. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declared on Thursday that Turkish warships would escort future convoys to the Gaza Strip to prevent a repeat of the deadly Israeli raid last year.

Yedioth Ahranoth said Lieberman plans meetings with PKK leaders in Europe in order to find ways to cooperate with them “in every possible area.”In these meetings, the PKK leaders may ask Israel for military aid in the form of training and arms supplies, the report said.

Lieberman is also planning active Israeli participation in efforts worldwide to report Turkey's “violations of human rights” in treatment of minorities in Turkey.

“We'll exact a price from Erdoğan that will prove to him that messing with Israel doesn't pay off. Turkey better treat us with respect and common decency,” Lieberman was quoted as saying.

Whether Lieberman's threats could ever be implemented remains questionable. Turkey's demand for an apology has divided the Israeli government, with hawks such as Lieberman strictly opposing it while others insisting that a way must be found to restore ties because Turkey is an ally of critical importance for Israel.

On Thursday, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Israel and Turkey will eventually mend fences rather than become foes, dismissing their apology dispute as “spilled milk.”

Speaking on Friday, another Israeli official said Erdoğan's threat of sending warships to eastern Mediterranean was “grave and serious” but refused to go into a war of words.

"Turkey, which declares that Israel is not above international law, must understand that it isn't either," Dan Meridor, the Israeli Cabinet minister in charge of intelligence, said. "I do not think it would be correct to get into verbal saber rattling with him now. I think that our silence is the best answer, and I hope this will pass " Meridor told Army Radio. "I think anyone who is listening can make their own mind up about him and the direction he has chosen.”

Is that an inference that Nato would come to the aid of Turkey against perceived Israeli aggression?

forget Zaman . it was also published in Israel newspaper which took the words directly from the Israeli foreign minister . and what has tukey done for nato so far ? it was against Libya and iraqs liberation so i say maybe nato might reconsider turkey's membership sooner or later.

turkey clearly helps hamas and hizbullah , and Erdogan said this time they will send war ships to protect the aids sent to gaza to prevent israel from attacking turkish citizens .

also why is it turkey killing civilians in iraqi kurdistan in the name of pkk ??? what you are scared KRG will help syrian kurds earn freedom ? i dont think so . this double standard of turkey is ridiculous and they have to taste their own medicine .

Hey, if Iran can fund and support Hamas and Hezbollah along with tacit support from Jordan and Syria and Turkey then why shouldn't the Israelis send some weapons the way of the Kurds while we Americans just sorta look the other way?

I want to see the Kurds in Iraq espeically forged into a real army and a free nation of their own so they never, ever again have to go through this:

I see this, and think the Iraq war was worth it to free these people from being gassed in their own homes.

very sad memories in kurdish history above , there is also Al Anfal campaign that claimed lives of 120,000 innocent women children and elderlies by the hand of Saddam who were all buried in the deserts of south iraq .

iran turkey ans syira support hamas and hizbulla , while they are oppressing there own kurdish minority , israel and US should do the same with helping armed kurdish groups like PKK and PJAK to liberate the oppressed kurds since muslim countries do not say one word about the unfairness secular Muslim kurds received at the hands of muslims .

hypocrisy of these 3 evil countries is just quite shameful .

So the kurds have been suckered into following in Israel's footsteps..

Don't you know you will be landlocked and Israel will exploit you to the max?

Why do you think they have been arming the Kurdish contractors since 1952? Why do you think the Soviets also used the Kurds during the Cold war.

The Kurdish rebels.. who apparently can't do anything else, have made life hell for the majority of Kurds.

KRG aka south autonomous kurdistan has a strong army called the "Peshmerga" of 150,000 troops , the only thing they don't have is "fighter jets" maybe Israel can sell us some .... we have helis tanks and other artillery to protect us from any possible more genocides by our surrounding brutal enemies .

if there wont be war there will definitely be hostleness between the 2 from now on each supporting armed groups .

and another thing is Turkey is making a fuss about the Mavi Marmara to show that it cares about the Middle East and the Arabs only as a way to cover its sinister intentions and malign actions such as installing the American defense missile on its soil and how it is trying to become the region's top dog by installing regimes affiliated to it as is the case in Syria.
In the process, Turkey has done a stupendous job in covering its tracks by diverting the attention of the regional countries to this renewed Israeli-Turkish theatrical display.

Oh please.... Israel has been supporting Kurdish rebels since 1952.. They don't give a rat's butt how many Kurds die in their cause.

They want Iraqi oil and the Kurds are pawns.
