How about we give the Israelis a million dollars for each settlement home they dismantle and the settlers returned to Israel proper? They can start with the stupid ones (Hebron!) and work their way down the list. That's 20,0000 homes, which would be just about all the key settlement homes holding up defining a Palestinian territory and the Israelis could buy a LOT of firepower.

The current Israeli government's dream of maintaining the status quo until Israel absorbs the remainder of the West Bank and continues to make Gaza such a hellhole that the Palestinians abandon it is a fantasy. Like the Germans at Stalingrad, they'll never overwhelm those last, irreducible chunks of resistance. And like the Russians, the initiative is with the Palestinians. It will be perpetual war, financed by the US taxpayer, until demographics and bankruptcy destroy the Jewish State. So the clock is ticking. Israel can either get real and work with the Palestinians for a two state solution or gradually, and ironically, be absorbed by the Arabs.

And having watched the US Congress bleat and kowtow before Bibi three weeks ago, I'd say Israel's prospects for a dose of reality are pretty bleak.

 

The Israeli lobby is an interest group with strong Jewish Zionist and Christian Zionist(Think rapture narrative) wings. Throw in military businesses that do a hot business based on military conflict in the ME and a dedicated arms business from our subsidies to Israel and you have one potent lobby. Orchestrated rapid fire extensive responses to anything that doesn't pass AIPAC's Israel first smell test and lots of money raising makes the Israel lobby a political powerhouse on matters in its sphere of interest.

But is it a grand secret conspiracy? Not that I can see. No more than the NRA, another potent lobby. It's the way our democracy works. Most people are politically indifferent to most issues so they have little affect in either direction. It is the dedicated swing minorities who commonly make critical legislative votes a sin qua non for future support who pretty much dictate policy in their sphere of concern.

So whose fault then is this down on the knees sycophancy to the Israeli lobby? Mainly the American public it appears who keep electing and reelecting politicians who curtsy to Israel and refuse to criticize her or vote against her. Why they keep shooting themselves in the foot is where I would like to see this discussion go.
