M.Sc. 1968 (Technion-Israel)

and has been on the Technion-Israel stuff ever since.

 

Just a few thoughts:
1) Is it possible that a pro-Jewish bias exists within the Nobel Committees? I mean Jewish people are influential in the media and the academic establishment not to mention the World Bank and the IMF. Is it possible to suggest that they are capable of influencing the Nobel award?

I think everyone would agree that some of the awards are politically motivated.

2) Technology is certainly not an unmixed blessing. Science empowers bad people along with the good. Those suffering through traffic jams or aerial bombardment or a Barbara Streisand movie might be skeptical of the benefits of technology.

3) Attempts to justify Israeli murder of civlians are becoming increasingly outlandish. As are the excuses why the American taxpayer must be compelled to pay Israel's bills.

Again, his major work and discoveries took place in America. Nobody has denied that he was associated with Technion. He just didn't actually cut it whilst in Israel.

Clearly you did not bother to read the full story how his group leader kicked his ass back to Israel for his stupid observations. Yes those observations he later got his Novel for. The work on them was done in Israel.

I told him that I taught my students from the book, but that I also knew that we're dealing with something that exceeded the book's understanding," Shechtman says. The director returned 24 hours later and asked him to leave the research group, because he was "bringing disgrace" on the members.

At the end of 1983, following the conclusion of his sabbatical, Shechtman returned to the Technion. Only one person was ready to listen in earnest: Prof. Ilan Blech, from the Technion's Faculty of Materials Science. He suggested that the two of them work together on the discovery. Within a short time he developed a model that derives the phenomenon from a pentagonal symmetry, which is one of the rotational symmetries of a three-dimensional body called an icosahedron - an entity composed of 20 identical equilateral triangular faces. Shechtman now felt sufficiently confident to publish an article on the subject....
