Correct of course. As we know the era of the battleship as a counter-naval force ended with the rise of the carrier in WW II although they still maintianed a naval role in other forms of engagments. Their big guns just weren't relevant in naval combat because of the extended range of aircraft that could attack other naval forces hundreds of miles away.

At the same time I'm sad that we've decomissioned all of our battleships as I believe they could play a role in peace as opposed to war. They are impressive when it comes to our military visiting the ports of friendly nations even though their role as a fighting force was superseded by the carriers. Having visited the Mighty Mo' I believe it is one of the most impressive of all naval ships merging beauty and functionality in a wonderful blend even if they are technologically obsolete. I miss our battleships.

Yep- still glad I had a chance to tour one.

So it seems appropriate to come up with a WW2 BB question.

One of the oddities of older WW2 Battleships is that they were often armed with torpedo's.

Name the Battleship which claimed it scored a torpedo hit on another battleship in WW2

Not the one I was looking for as there are various reasons that Dublin was bombed, some say it was intentional other say a mistake but if it was a mistake they made it many times.

Let's play "identify some lesser-known aircraft". What is this? The seat configuration is a big clue.

    Oh this is fun.

Fixed wheels? Are those French markings? I have no idea- at first I was thinking it had the lines of a Fairley but now I am thinking French or Polish....

    Fun one.

That's a Miles M14A Magister, the RAF trainer aircraft used to train Hurricane and Spitfire pilots. Hence the two seats. They were popular post-war as civilian racer aircraft. 1300 built, but fewer than 10 airworthy now, as the glued plywood airframes did not age well.

The one interesting wartime mission with a Magister was during the fall of France in 1940, when a Magister with one empty seat was flown into a French airfield (one not quite overrun yet) to successfully rescue a stranded British pilot. Among the Spitfire escorts was (future) Kiwi Spitfire ace Al Deere, who scored his first kill there, against a Bf109.

Here's another of the British "make it out of wood, because metal is scarce" aircraft to take a guess at.

Unusual gun turned in during buy-back program...

WW2 weapon turned in during gun buy-back program in CT
December 8, 2012 - Police officers in Connecticut received one very unusual weapon during a gun buy-back program last week -- the gun was from World War II and is worth over $30,000.
Anybody know what gun they're talking about here?

The Germans developed at least a couple of what we might call 'assault rifles' towards the end of the war- this is from memory.

Now I am looking it up- ah- STG 44 - aka MP 44. This would probably be it.
