Are you daft? Cobblers fixing shoes, bakers baking cakes, artists painting pictures - these were your weapons of war? Sure they had industry.

If you paid attention to the way the war in Germany went, all they needed to do was bomb them with normal bombs, not nukes, to stop arms production.

"Hirohito refused request by the prime minster of Japan to end the war in January, 1945, seven months before atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. From 1944 to 1945 he urged his generals and admirals to gain one last major military victory so that Japan could obtain an "exit strategy" that would preserve the "imperial way." During that time an additional 1.5 million Japanese were killed.

In the spring of 1945, the Truman administration decoded intercepted messages that read the Emperor himself was participating in the “struggle to surrender." As the battle raged in Okinawa, Hirohito was foolishly obsessed with trying get the then neutral Soviet Union to support a plan to get Britain and the United States to accept a negotiated surrender on Japanese terms. This was offered by Hirohito biographer Theodore Bix as proof that Hirohito was more than a passive bystander in World War II and that he was willing to oppose his advisors and that his judgment was questionable.

Bix holds Hirohito responsible for the deaths at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He wrote: Hirohito "misread the evidence because it conflicted with his goal of negotiating an end to the war that would guarantee an authoritarian imperial system with himself and the Emperor throne at the center."

Japan was more than willing to fight on to gain surrender on their own terms.
"In anticipation of the invasion, the Japanese had 540,000 troops and 5,000 kamikaze pilots stationed in Kyushu, ready to put up enough of a fight to force Washington into accepting a negotiated settlement. Allied intelligence estimated that there were only 84,200 Japanese troops in southern Kyushu.

Japanese soldiers awaiting the invasion had been instructed to strap explosives to themselves and throw themselves at U.S. tanks and fight with sharpened pieces of bamboo and shovels. Japanese schoolgirls were told to carry a carpenter's awl with them and "aim at the abdomen." One girls said she was told, "If you don't kill at least one enemy soldier, you don't deserve to die." Japanese soldiers at prisoner of war camps were given orderes to behead, stab or shoot the 100,000 or so remaining prisoners of war the moment an invasion began."

Claims that the bombs that hit Hiroshima and Nagasaki were purely for show just are not rooted in reality. Clearly.

Targeting civilians is a war crime.

Additionally, yes, there were massive issues with blasting nuclear warheads over heavily populated areas.

    http://k1project.org/explore-health/hiroshima-and-nagasaki-the-long-term-health-effects

Leukemia killing children. Guess it's OK to nuke people and kill kids with leukemia, but let's outlaw abortion. A-O-K. Makes no sense.

Sure, the cities may have recovered now; but the fallout did massive damage and inhumane causation of cancer is unforgivable, and the US -should- apologize for it's use of WMD's on a civilian population.

Correct. The Japanese military had to be maneuvered into a position where the Emperor could order them to surrender. It was a close thing.

Even after the surrender message was recorded for radio broadcast the military attempted to capture the Emperor and destroy the surrender recording. The Imperial Palace and the radio station were stormed by troops.

Why is none of this taught in our schools?

The details of the attempt of the Japanese to avoid surrender are not taught in our schools. Why is that?

The details about the massive preparations for the American invasion are also not taught. Odd.

Most Americans have no clue how much Japan had prepared to defend against invasion. They had huge stockpiles of all manner of weapons from handled to artillery and even aircraft hidden in the mountains, with very detailed plans to arm and completely mobilize all civilians in a fight to the last Japanese.

It was learned that at that time the Japanese would do just that, fight to the last bullet and then suicide before surrendering - for which we would be fighting civilians not wearing uniforms. It also was learned even if under armed, out of food and completely outnumbered and outgunned when they had dug in they still could inflict huge numbers of American casualties.

However, also not known is that it was the "unconditional surrender" requirement that was the problem. Many members of the Japanese royal family was in the military and had committed mass attrocities and war crimes in China and in POW camps.

Even AFTER the 2 atomic bombs the Emperor would not surrender until we promised not to put any members of the imperial family on trial. We honored that agreement that we did make and even if of known atrocities against American POWs we did not put them on trial. Most of the Japanese military still opposed surrendering, but the Emperor made a radio announced to end-run around the military locking down the surrender - after we had promised not to put his relatives or him on trial.

What use are aircraft if there's no fuel for them? In addition what is your evidence for these 'huge' stockpiles of arms?

We intentionally sought to inflict massive damage and casualties to try and force an end to the war, which was imminent without using the bombs. I'd say it was absolutely intentional.

Nor are the details of the CIA letters discussing Japan sending out requests for peace talks in March 1945 taught in your schools

Conventional incendiary bombs dropped by American B-29s killed more in Japan than either of the atomic bombs. The thing is, the atomic bombs instantly killed 140,000 and many thousands more later from the radiation...long after the war had ended.

It's similar to using anti-personnel mines...long after a war ends those things still take innocent lives.

After the collapse of the twin towers in NYC, tons of asbestos dust was released into the area, we are now seeing an increase in asbestos related illnesses and deaths, 15 years after the event. The same happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, many years after the bombs were dropped, cancers developed from the exposure to radiation, taking more lives.

We only have these two real World examples of atomic/nuclear bombs being used against people, and they are a horrible indiscriminate weapon of war.

It's too bad humanity can't along better and make sure these weapons never see the light of day ever again. The fact is, we don't get along, and we haven't seen the end of nuclear weapons.

Japanese civilians were being militarized very deliberately and in highly planned ways. All of Japan's civilians were becoming military personnel.

However, it was learned in WWII that bombing civil populations did NOT serve military advantage, hardened civilian resistance and diverted from attacking military targets.

The atomic bomb demonstrated we could obliterate civilian population without the huge American casualties the Japan military calculated AND meant the Imperial city and Emperor himself could not be safe.

So then we can both agree on something: we can both agree that "Allah" doesn't really know right from wrong (no all-knowing entity would simply go along with the ethical standards of the barbaric 7th century - he'd know that sex with kids causes psychological damage) since he sat on his hands while his hand-picked #1 role model for ALL time (Mohammad) was porking an innocent child - thereby causing Islam untold damage to it's reputation, thereby causing many people to go to "hell" (as non-Muslims) because they don't want to follow the religion of a person who had sex with kids, right?

    Thanks.

The Japanese were conducting high level peace talks when they attacked Pearl Harbor. There was no CIA until 1947.

Civilians near military targets are often killed in war. It is not a war crime.

Cities are almost always involved in industrial military production. They are military targets.

In the wars fought since WW II where cities were not destroyed was there less resistance?

What arrogance. Imminent? You realize that just two months prior to dropping the bomb we were loosing 25% of our B-29's per raid and that our economic impact on Japan was marginal. Our targeted industries were only sustaining 2% to 5% damage. Unsustainable! Keep also in mind that Japan still had 7,000,000 men under arms; 5.5m in the army alone and still enough of a navy to protect the home islands long enough to bring the armies and garrisons back from China and Korea.

    Cheers

Actually, the one million American "lives" figure is an estimation mistake that is often made by most people on both sides of the issue.

When the one million or even the one million+ figure is used, it actually means one million "casualties".

And causality figures are all of the dead, wounded, and missing, not just those killed in battle or by other means.

And, in most cases, the wounded and missing figures far exceed the actual death figure(s).

I meant in the cia archives https://www.cia.gov/library/center-...ence/kent-csi/vol9no3/html/v09i3a06p_0001.htm

    Also this, http://nsarchive.gwu.edu/NSAEBB/NSAEBB162/42.pdf
From Japan council "the war must be fought .....as long as the only alternative was the unconditional surrender"

    And this : https://books.google.co.uk/books?id...RzAJ#v=onepage&q=cia japanese feelers&f=false

"Truman unambiguously characterized the intercepted July 18th cable that stated "unconditional surrender is the only obstacle to peace" as the telegram from the Jap emperor asking for peace"

    Total deaths on Okinawa

    12,000 US
    110,000 Japanese military
    100,000 Japanese civilian

On just that one small island which was completely cut off.

    Iwo Jima

7,000 US killed in just 38 days on an Island Japan had completely given up and had order that every man fight to the death with no hope of defeating the attackers.
Japan 21,800 killed only 200 prisoners taken, again on a small island they had no hope of defending.

So let's stop trying to make the case that the casualties in a main island invasion didn't matter and would have been minimal because the Japanese would not have mounted a HUGE defensive effort designed to kill as many Americans as possible without regard to their own civilian casualties.

Japan had already used "peace talks" to prepare for their surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. It would have been irresponsible for our leaders to stop attacking Japan before the surrender - which was not unconditional.

Thanks for clarifying your comment regarding the CIA.

The mobilization of the Japanese civilian population was very comprehensive. Any invasion of Japan would have been a nightmare for our troops and the Japanese.

Not just Japan but.but the world should that the US for stopping their aggression. The other Asian countries despise Japan for constantly invading their countries. The US put an end to that.
