It is known that Jesus spoke Aramaic, a Semtex language similar to Arabic and Hebrew.

Well, the word for God in Aramaic, like in Arabic, is Allah.

So, Jesus (PBUH) would have used Allah when talking about God in Aramaic, just like Arab Christians do today in Arabic.

I say this because there are Christians who say "oh you Mozlems worship Allah not the real God" and "Allah is a moon god" and so on and so on. Well then it seems Jesus (PBUH) also worshipped a false, moon god as well. And do not forget the millions of Arab Christians and Jews, who also call God Allah, therefore also worshipping a false Pagan idol.

We translated the aramaic speech of Jesus since a very very long time now into our own languages. The "holy language" - if such a thing would exist in the christian religion - would be the ancient greek language. But we don't have a special holy language. So we are using the word "god" if we are using the english language. It's not astonishing if people are looking for explanations why another word for god is used from Muslims. Nevertheless: Merry Christmas (=birthday of the prophet Jesus)

Didn't the Qu'ran teach us that God's name is Allah and up until then His name was Yahwey?

Stop immediatlely this attack and the attempt to try to misuse his holy name. You are in conflict with Jews and Catholics now - and I dont' know wether you are also in conflict with pious Muslims now. God is love - god is reason - so: try this ways and not wrong ways. It's Christmas.

You're not supposed to take God's name in vain, right? What counts as in vain? In this case, we are discussing the name of God, I wouldn't say that's in vain, but then again, I might lack the finer understanding of ancient Greek. Surely, using the name of God when discussing the name of God is not misuse?

I find it rather interesting, I'd like to see more on the subject jmpet spoke of, do we have a reference to a verse or something? Or something related in the Bible?

Edit: or would it be Hebrew?

The OT Israelites/Jews got caught up in the 'dead letter' of the Law, taking it to the point of not even lifting anything (not matter how small or if a need) on the Sabbath.

The word 'vain' in the modern dictionary means:

    vain,
    as 'in vain'

    1. In an irreverent or disrespectful manner: took the Lord's name in vain.

[Middle English, from Old French, from Latin vnus, empty; see eu- in Indo-European roots.]

    n
in vain to no avail; fruitlessly
    take someone's name in vain
    a. (Christian Religious Writings / Bible) to use the name of someone, esp God, without due respect or reverence

Saying "G-D" is using God's name often not to 'dam-" someone or something, but fruitlessly or w/o meaning.

I had a 'religious' uncle of mine who considered himself a 'good Catholic,' (had an altar set up in his basement and had a priest serve communion weekly to a group of 20 ppl) , who never said "G-d" but when he got mad would say (phonetically) "Keeeeeee-Rissssttttt", i.e. using the name of Christ again w/o meaning....he felt that he wasnt asking to 'dam-' anyone---I and the other kids saw it as using a 'technicality' of God.

    Your premise is off.

Yahwey sounds a little like Allah, but not the same.

If you want to go off sound, Allah sounds like a modified version of the original Hebrew El - their general word for god which was used to describe false gods. Their word for the one true God was different - Elohim.

Jahwe (wrongly written as Jehova for many years) was the true name of God in the Old Testament, meaning 'I am'. Yet, the Isrealites belived this name to be too holy to speak, so they referred to god as Elhohim, and this would have been the name Jesus would have used when referring to the Jewish God.

Elhoim ... its plural..is from the Ugaritic, where it is used for the pantheon of Canaanite Gods, the children of El and conventionally vocalized as "Elohim" ..

Response: Yahweh comes from the letters YHWH in the bible. Yet this was never the name of Allah(God). YHWH is the name mentioned in exodus 3:14 to Moses. Yet in exodus 6:3, we see that the name was not yet known and God appeared to Abraham by the name of God Almighty, but was not known by the name YHWH. We go to Genesis 4:26, and it states that men began to call the name of God during the time of Enos, the son of Seth, the grandson of Adam. Yet in Geneis 17:1, we see that the name was actually revealed to Abraham. So it is not logical to conlude that God's name is Yahweh from the bible, because it contradicts other passages in the bible.

To understand where YHWH comes from, one can just analyze where the word Yahowai, or Yahweh, comes from. The original manuscripts were written with no vowels. So YHWH became Yahowai after the writers of the bible placed the vowels in the text. The original vowels however were not none and the knowledge was lost. So when the vowels were placed, the people of the time felt it unholy to read the name of God, so they used the vowels of the word adonai, which is hebrew for the word "lord". Thus when the readers would read the bible, they would read "lord". However, this knowledge became lost, and instead, Yahowai became coined as the actual name of God. Yahowai became latinized to Jehovah, while Yahweh came about because it is the closest logical guess to a hebrew word, meaning "He is."

So we see that if the writers of the bible thought themselves to be unholy to read the Bible, then we can logically conclude that the writers would not actually write the name as well. Thus the writers of the bible thought themselves unholy to read and write the name of God, so the letters YHWH was placed to say "He Is". Later, the vowels of adonai was placed to let the readers know that this was the Lord, making it Yahowai. However, it was later coined as the actual name of God by a mistake.

The actual name of God in the Bible is also mentioned as Elohim. This is the hebrew word for God. In the bible, you can also read the word as "Ella", or "El" for short. We can also read the bible and see that this was the original name of God in Hebrew, not Yahweh. This can be demonstrated by the names of people in the Bible. "Israel" was the name given by God to Jacob, which means God's prince. Here, we notice that this name derives from the name of God "El". Jesus also cries from the cross, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani", which means my God my God, why has thou forsaken thee. Again, Jesus uses Eli, which is closely similar to Allah in arabic.

Yes it has been translated, but that wasn't my point. I wasn't saying Aramaic was a holy language either.

My point was Jesus spoke mainly Aramaic. Jews also spoke Aramaic. So when he referred to God, in Aramaic, he would of called God Allah.

Yes I understand very language has it's own translation of God. And in Arabic, it is also Allah. The Quran was written in Arabic which is why most Muslims, whether Arab or otherwise, call God Allah. This should not be astonishing to people...

However in Islam there are 99 Names for God, all describing God. The same God. Allah.

My point of this thread was to show those certain Christians who say Allah SWT is a false God and not the real God, that - of course - they are wrong. And that even Jesus (PBUH) himself has used Allah when referring to God.

Yaweh, aka El, was head God of the Caananites. Baal (the storm God) was his No. 2, which is why the Old Testament keeps on about not worshipping him instead of El, the No. 1. So much for monotheism.

If it is such a bore, why bother replying. Especially when you don't even know the point of this thread.

Nowhere did I say Allah is the only right way to address God. So... What are YOU looking for by saying this?

Please, read my posts before responding :)

I believe that you are mistaking the noun god (describing a supernatural entity like Apollo, or Zeus) and the proper-name God (the monotheistic capitalized name of the 0ne creator, like Allah or Yaweh).

So when talking about other gods he would have used allah as well in that description.

I don't know that he is. I think I might be though.
إله‎ or آلهة would be god noun... vs الله meaning THE God... proper name. Aramaic does translate God as Allah in every lexicon I can find.

    He might be right.

God is a generic term, but the true God of the Jews and Christians has a proper name, YHWH, not Allah that is used as a proper name. Jesus warned that there would be false prophets, Mohammad is one of those.

I wouldn't exactly call Mohammed a false prophet because the Qu'ran is a holy book and he is the author. But we all forget that it's in the Qu'ran that God tells us what His name is: Allah. Personally I see no contradiction here- God is Allah is Yahwey is El... it's the same One True God.

No- that's what I believe. I believe in one God- "there is no god but God". Any religion that worships one God is worshipping God!

    How do you pronounce YHWH?

Yes. This is what I have said so many times on this forum, nice to see somebody else say it :)

    God = Allah = Yahwey = God

It is all one God. The God of Abraham (PBUH). The God who created the universe and everything in it.

We worship the same God, only call him by different names based on culture and language. Arab Christians and Jews call God Allah, I sometimes call Allah God as do other English speaking Muslims.

    here are some thoughts:

why make the name of your deity "yhwh" become a monopoly
for a certain class of people (rabbis)? and not disclose to others?
why not make the most exalted name of all names and the holy presence
of your lord become known for all the people on earth with joy and love?

    ever thought about it?
why alter the book that was once pure and perfect?
    why hide "the name"?

(sparing the goyim thing, that doesn't contribute to the question.)

leaving that aside, let's jump couple of milleniums and ask:
what is the etymology of the word "god", is that a new
european invention? what are the roots of that word?

one must really look at the historical and archeological ressources,
comparing them with myths, then with all the religious books
    before the qur'an.

maybe understand how the same message has been manipulated,
and how mankind have been diverted from Allah, with all sorts of gods,
triologies, pantheons, no deity theories, entertainment (as in; live your
life, do whetever you want, you are free) and so on...

who is the diverter? how does he do it?
why and how mankind become an enemy to their own creator Allah?
    how this ignorance is fed?

so arrogant and sadly ungrateful that most of the humanity is not even
considering to think the name Allah might be "the name" of his lord.

that's why, in islam, there is no clergy, no class in between,
we are facing Allah (God) alone and not looking for any made up names,
not hiding it from anyone, or not seeking help from any divine partners.
in fact islam constantly encouraging people to remember their one
and only ilah, Allah. the way it ought to be.

the message is clear and simple:
    :below:

islam is the only perfect monotheistic religion on earth.
there is no god but Allah,
the creator of the heavens and the earth,
    all creation and souls.
and muhammed (saw) is his messenger for all mankind.

    "the name" is out there.
    remember Allah.
