Mathias de Sousa, an African-Portugese Jew, arrived in 1634 with Maryland's first European settlers, most of whom were Catholics fleeing the religious intolerance of the Old World.

De Sousa earned freedom from indentured servitude and, by most historical accounts, had a life barely defined by his blackness. But that he was a man of color who achieved great success in early Maryland is remarkable in the eyes of most modern historians. He was one of nine indentured servants and scores of settlers who arrived on the Ark, which sailed up the Potomac River and landed at St. Mary's City--the fourth English settlement in the New World and Maryland's capital until 1695.
