It shouldn't matter if the banned member is con or lib, as long as they adhere to the rules, and have something more to offer that the same banal one liners, agitation or flame baiting. If they have nothing to offer but, than its their fault, not the mods, if they are banned.
Liberals and Conservatives alike are fellow citizens, and those from abroad often have great insights into their way of life or political observation.
Different viewpoints are rather educational, its the obnoxious ones, on both sides, who are rather annoying.

You appear to be holding up amazingly well under what must surely be a crushing responsibility.

Most of the time, I think, most members follow lines of indoctrinations. There are a few, mostly from other countries, that show new and unexpected light onto things. Are mostly these outsiders that get banned rather than those following indoctrinations? I am an independent, and I think I have twice the chance to get banned than a con or a lib.

    Bon Jour.
No, it has nothing to do with independence, lib or con. Rules are rules, regardless. Bring your point across in a sensible manner, stick to the guidelines, and most people actually pay attention to what you have to say.
Some though rather toe the line, see how far they can push it, then cry for Mommy when called on it.

If you feel like you are getting seriously angry, either put that member who gets under your skin on ignore, or just wait to respond until you are more level headed. Also, if just waking up and or already angry from real life, probably best not to even come on. I'd bet 99% of people who got banned simply lost their cool, not counting sock puppets, which by the way is really cool they are going after. We all have had people whose posts we loved get ghosted.

Actually I am comparing this forum to another forum that has about 2900 active members and over 22,000 posts per week. So it is not much smaller than this one. I do not see how size is important when it comes to % of banned members.

I think one reason why so few members get banned there compared to here is that in other forum we are allowed to publicly discuss what the moderators have done. But here that is not allowed. Another is that they have a list of all members who have been banned.

If you go into an old thread here it is common to see banned under a few members names. In the other forum it is not so common.

NB: An active member is one that has made a post in the forum in the last month.

On the forums I've seen where it's allowed, half the posts are (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)ing about the moderation.

You could just go ahead and ban that poster. If they don't appeal, then they really wanted to be banned. It seems to be a fair and efficient method to find out.

I disagree. The extremists, who are full of anger and arrogance and are too full of themselves, are the ones who like to keep a pointless argument going which soon degenerates into a food fight, and they tend to get banned eventually. Maybe they are lonely and don't have much of a life beyond anonymous internet forums.
Wasting more than two or three replies on someone who is an obvious troll and is not interested in discussing points but in preening in public is another thing to avoid, as the tit for tat only leads to excess.
Many vain, immature posters love to get attention and will continue to trade asinine retorts for days if you encourage them.
If you want to avoid getting banned, don't waste your time with such people.
    Remember the old adage:
Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
    Good luck.

It's not the mods' fault that wingnuts cannot debate respectfully.

I think the mods are doing a fine job.

I've posted some very controversial topics, especially the one about underage sex and I haven't gotten any flak from the mods.

The key is to not use personal attacks. If you conduct yourself with a little tact then you won't get banned. From what I've seen, this forum promotes civil debate even when the topic may be taboo or not PC.
