I'll be the first to say I'm no less guilty than anyone else but after seeing two threads closed today it might be time to tone down some of the political infighting and attack the ideas not the people behind them before the Mods have to get more drastic in their enforcement.

Not exactly sure why its increased so rapidly but Submarinepainter certainly has been busy in current events dealing with it today.

I'll start off by pledging to confront more of the argument and less of the person posting it.

I hope many will do the same. And something else that might help I saw from Mello. If you see a good point by the other side or something struck you as funny, rep the person even if you never agree with them politically. It might help ease the personal tension between you and other member(s).

    Just an idea

Noble idea, Tex. Unfortunately, when people are attacked, they tend to attack back. Even if I signed a pledge to never smart off to a liberal again, it'd go right the window the second they call me a *********.

The rep thing is a good idea. I pledge to try to find something worthy of a rep by someone I least admire. Not sure it's gonna make 'em luv me, though. ;)

I never said don't challenge them just pledge to tone it back a bit when you can.

Attack the argument not the person more. Not to try and go cold turkey because that never works.

I toned it down after my last infraction. Not sure I can go much lower... but for you, I promise I'll try. :date:

Depending on the topic and who is commenting its either a struggle or a titanic struggle not to cave into to the mud slinging eye for an eye, toxic argument. That said, when I think about it I really don’t hate nor am I angry at the 'spiritual' part of the person, no I am mad at the persons deeds or words. There is a difference. I learned a coping thing in the Army that has helped me to this day. I was having an anger management problem with my DI, and actually fist fought him (which is a court-martial offense but we did it behind the PX, I am lucky he didn’t kill me).

Anyway afterwards I ask clergy for help. He told me I did not have to respect the man in the uniform but to respect the uniform and what it stood for. The purple heart and other metals etc It sounds corny but it worked for me…I have been infracted twice, once when I first got here secondly months later for insulting a member.

I didn't know you received a infraction! I when I see your name I usually check out what you have to say. God bless you, and hang in there.

Hyperbole and rhetoric are valuable tools in my extensive arsenal :) so I will not purposely handcuff myself to any "pledge" that may limit their use....

but I, like SMW, have been infracted a number of times for forays outside of 'proper' forum decorum and terms of service....
which has forced me to develop more creative and less overt ways to deliver my stinging personal rebukes and sideways insults.

And then, lest we forget, the ignore bin is always available for the most irresistible targets.

Then again you can always consider the source and ignore. Pretend they are not there.. Sometimes it hurts worse when you ignore someone than if you argued back.

Great idea Tex--and thank you for that! I hope all will consider just how much better the forum would be if everyone did just that.

After all--why lower yourselves to someone else's level. You can be better than that. You ALL have the ability to argue and debate aggressively but within the confines of abiding by the rules;without getting personal.

My own Mother was a Democrat and loved Bill Clinton til the day she died--we had some good political discussions and debates--but always with much respect for each others views. So it CAN be done here.

ALL---- Why not try it ??

So true, web. To be effective to the cause, one must learn to play by the rules. Took me 6 slaps to adapt... never claimed to be a fast learner.

You're right about that handy ignore button, too. I think of it as sending 'em into exile for awhile. When I can't remember why I put 'em there... I'll release 'em. Works for me.:gun:

I'm new here and still learning the ropes. The last board I was on people insulted each other regularly. There was even a Flame Zone where you could call someone out, including the mods. So I'd say I've been trying to tone down the rhetoric from day one because I certainly don't want to get banned.

That does happen on other boards - even those boards where the reps are visible and you can see who is reaping whom

It does not, or rather it rarely happens here

Sadly there are very few reps being given here anymore by anyone - except of course the abusers who continue to abuse not only the system but the board itself

that's fine - but why do you accuse anti zionists of being anti semites?

I have not seen you arguing against genuine anti semites - you seem to leave that to the "anti zionists" such as myself.

If it's such a great idea, don't pledge, just do it.

What I really love is the libs cannot argue logically, so they always resort to calling me a liar or ignorant or some other insult. Then, when I complain that They are engaging in personal attacks, I'm usually told that they just said your statement was a lie, not that you were a liar. Or they said your statement was ignorant, not you (which of course is in fact the same as calling me a liar or ignorant). So I just call them a liar or whatever insult they said to me. They need to stop with the personal insults.
