Looks pretty clean to have crashed; no dent, tear or rends. Though they do have the bottom side covered up.
It's probably a real drone. Though from what I've read, the cause of the crash was a catastrophic malfunction not "jamming" as claimed by Iran. The drone is programmed to RTB if the datalink is lost, so the malfunction goes beyond just signal loss. If nothing else it adds credence to keep humans in the cockpit for a while, at least until drone technology is perfected. Clearly unmanned systems have their place, but a fleet of drones replacing manned aircraft is a ways off...the technology has plenty of bugs to work out.
Exactly. Of course, if it is non just a wooden model to show off behind cameras a bit. Then it is sort of strange malfunction. If they didn't took control, how the hell it didn't crashed into pieces? It failed to return to the base, but somehow managed to land itself in the middle of nowhere on random terrain? I am not sure it would be clear if it is real or not for years, if they don't show it flying or several hundreds of "RQ-170" suddenly don't appear in China.
I tend to lean into the 'lost communications' idea. Drones are hard enough to land as it is, when you have full control and the years worth of training required. Hacking an encrypted datalink on the most advanced stealthy drone being sent via satellite to a machine publically acknowledged only a year ago you didn't design while it's in flight? I find it difficult to believe. You would also think they would have done this against the much-more numerous predators tooling about, especially since the link was partially unencrypted. As far as the landing intact enough to show off . . . . well, either you answered the question yourself: Or this thing lost communications, picked a direction and flew until it was out of fuel, pancaked in and Iran just got lucky. Too much not known publically about this incident yet, but, thusfar, Occam's Razor would tell you Iran just got lucky and are smart enough to make the most of it.

That was only video channel unencrypted. Useless for taking control over that thing. Whole Predator is not nearly as useful as RQ-170 remains on my mind. Moreover there is no need to send it to the border or into Iran's territory. "Stealthy" drone fits more here in my mind.
As I have posted earlier , there are a few odd circumstances about this incident , and considering it to be an American intelligence ruse from the very start , is not necessarily idiotic . Particularly if some sort of real attack is imminent . Go on Yankee mad men . Make my Xmas and Light my fire and theirs as well .
