I love how some people are so uninformed, yet SO SURE they know what is going on. Gulf of Tonkin happened. North Vietnam attacked our warships and was beaten back. They freely admit to the attack. The next day, the USS Maddox reported it was under attack again when apparently it was not. It was reported to Congress that there were two attacks when it is possible (but not proven) that Johnson knew at the time there was probably only one attack. It also didn't start the war. It escalated the war. Facts are wonderful things.
Kennedy, who had planned withdrawal by 1965, was murdered to allow the "escalation" and you claim Tonkin did not start it? WAKE UP PATRIOT ! For your uninformed little head, if JFK was not murdered IN 1963, the war would have ended in 1965. CASE CLOSED !
Kennedy was an astute politician who knew that if he made his plans for absolute withdrawl public, the Republicans would call him another Chamberlain, and he had his eye on the next election. He in fact said something like "We better win the next election or we will never get out of Vietnam". Johnson thought that if we left Vietnam, it would trigger World War III --he was in fact that paranoid.
