Old Cold War stereotypes prevail in Western media’s images of Russia

    if you look at global media sources, it is interesting the way different stories are presented.

    I don't think Russian reporting is any more biased than most news sources I have accessed - and in fact seems to be more objective than most western commercial news media sources I have seen.

    From memory, the Putin Medvedev cartoons shown in this thread were frowned upon by the government, but were still shown - although hevaily criticised.

    I could be wrong - but thats what I seem to remember.

    I think its time we got over the cold war.

    Russia is more capitalist than most places in the west (Moscow has more millionaires than any other city) and Russia is no more imperialist and controlling than other similar sized nations.

    Western reporting of events such as the conflict with Georgia several years ago was misreported in th e west. The Georgian opposition leader was imprisoned, as were demonstrators protesting against Saakashvili's government.

    this wasn't reported because georgia was supposedly an ally of the west.

    we also hear good things only about pro western/anti russian candidates in Ukrainian politics - we never hear about the corruption charges they have had levelled against them.

    don't kid yourself - western media is full of agendas that reinforce our own propaganda..

    silicon - PLEASE look at international comparisons on education before you start making these claims.

    In my experience, the average Russian I have met is far better educated than the average American that I have met - and since I have been to Russia, but haven't been to America .... it could be far worse if I was comparing stay at home americans ...

    among Russian immigrants here - including those who were educated under the soviet system - I have found people who are not only well educated, but who have a much broader based education than most people in western countries.

    In addition - when I was studying education I looked at the Russian Education system as part of a unit on comparative education. An American Educationist who spent several years in Russia studying their education system compared the system favourably to that operating in the US.


    think before you write Silicon.

    just because you incorrectly assume Russia is a threat doesn't make you an expert on its education system.

    You're absolutely right! Russian have a wonderful education system! They are, however, racist. But if you drink vodka with them, racism will disappear and you become a best friend.
