12 ga. 00 buckshot for close quarters, carbine of rifle for a bit more distance, and a handgun you can use with ease. Practice, practice practice until you are familiar with what you handle. I consider Mossberg as the "chevy" of shotguns. You get a lot of bang for your bucks. Personally, a Rutger 10/22 for hunting or for fun in da sun .380 or larger for a handgun. Careful, once you start looking, you'll never stop. Guns, under the correct situation, can be fun. It takes a certain kind of person to be able to shoot another human, even in self-defense. Make da*&ned sure you have the tenacity to use it when called upon.

if one carries a gun, just remember if your shot by the authorities, they did not shot a unarmed civilian, no need to plant a gun, you already have one .

Well, that last 20 years of laws changing in the States allowing conceal carry will not change. They changed for a valid reason, to allow law abiding citizens to protect themselves from criminals. Police have to respond to any "man with a gun" call from the frightened sheep so all this would do is make life tougher for law enforcement.
My wife carries a ported Smith and Wesson model 60-9. Example. It is very accurate, easy to shoot even with magnum loads, and can be loaded with .38s for practice or if your finace is initially uncomfortable with .357 magnums. I would recommend a custom purse to hold it. They are a little pricy, but my wife loves hers and considers it worth the money.
I got my daughter a S&W 642. Small, light, and without an exposed hammer. Easy to carry and easy to use and fairly inexpensive used.
.357 is a bit much for self defense. Sure..it'll shoot through an engine block...and that's great if you ever get attacked by an engine block...but shooting that in an urban environment could kill several people....many blocks away... a .40 would be good...even a 9mm or .380 with hollow points would have more stopping power as the energy of the round is (mostly) dissipated when it enters a body, causing more damage than a round that flies right through and continues out the other side for half a mile. ...but...ANY weapon is better than none.
That is why you use a high quality hollow point defensive round instead of fmj ammo. Even if you consider .357 ammo excessive, you can still load it up with .38 special ammo. I think you're overplaying the power in a .357 as well. It won't shoot through an engine block, nor will it kill several people several blocks away. Ever see the movie Johnny Dangerously? I think you're talking about the .88 Magnum.
OMG LOL I have a tenant who talks about her .357 with armor piercing rounds that will shoot through an engine block. Every time she brings it up, I'm just like "um..... nope. Not going to happen, maybe .50BMG, but certainly not a .357." I have heard that story about 37 times.

You're still believing the hype and not the reality. IF the bullet only hit soft tissue, it is highly unlikely to have enough energy left to penetrate the next person and impossible to go through two people and penetrate, much less pass through a third. Source. Hollow points have between 9 and 14 inches penetration with hollow points in ballistic gelatin. Source. Compare that to a 9mm, a round you claim is "safer" in an urban environment, and it has between 8 and 16 inches penetration with hollow points. A shame.
I have a small compact .38, the "ladysmith". That is for carry purposes. It is simple and intuitive to use. For "behind the bed with the cell phone on speed dial to 911" I have a double barreled shotgun.,

she's from across the pond, I suspect. 90% of them have never seen a firearm up close and personal, but they sure sound like experts.
In gelatin tests, some 38 rounds have penetrated further than a 357 so they are about equal in penetration. One cause would be that the hollow point did not expand properly. Hollow points are used instead of ball ammo for self defense so it releases all of it's energy in the target so you don't have pass through that could injure someone else. You should read up on ballistics before you make statements about something you don't know about.
