You think the only thing that determines a load's strength is penetration? Wow. No WONDER you're so confused!

Yes, really. Someone who takes life so seriously as to not take in a good comedy and enjoy it for what it is doesn't sound like a very happy person to me. What the actors / actresses do or are is immaterial to me as well. The performance, though, is a different matter. You should live a little. Laugh once in a while. Stop taking life so seriously and quit worrying about them nasty .357s killing multiple people several blocks away. ;-)

Well, for load strength penetration is going to be the biggest factor. For kill shot, you want a shot that is going to stop in the target and put all its energy into the victim. Such as a hollow point... Also when attacking multiple figures you want more shots , such as 10 to 30. With a magnum, most guns that have that run in the 6 shot or less catergory. But you can practice, and reload very quickly.

I've fired ported Glocks side by side, and at night. The porting does help a little with recoil, but increases the sound the shooter hears and there is a big blast of exhaust from the ports. At night, the exhaust from the ports is impressive - and a bit blinding.

And with ported you better hold it at arms length. A chest or hip hold will get you a blast of gas and residue in the face and eyes.

Porting does reduce the effectiveness of the round. Its just like having a shorter barrel.

I do not recommend ported handguns. The benefit is slight particularly in small caliber handguns. If you need a ported handgun to handle the caliber, just go to a smaller caliber and a nonported firearm. My opinion.

I've shot the model 60 at night and didn't see much, if any, exhaust. There is some blast from the barrel, but that is expected and not hard to recover from. Have you tried different rounds? The different powders can produce dramatically more or less flash at night. I've found Buffalo Bore ammo to have very little flash.

I agree, although the port job on her .357 ports gas up at an angle instead of straight up. I don't understand chest or hip holds. Take the time to bring the gun up and aim.

Yup. So use a quicker burning poweder. The cartridges are built with shorter barrels in mind.

Recoil isn't an issue, and porting doesn't really affect felt recoil all that much. What it does is reduce muzzle flip which can get dramatic in short barreled weapons. I find it much easier to reacquire the target with her 60 than my friends M&P with the same length barrel, but that might be explained by familiarity with the weapon.

My wife's gun came from the S&W factory ported. I've shot short barreled .357s that were quite hard on the hand from muzzle flip. The 60-9 is quite nice and shoots more like a hot .38 than a .357. I've also shot some ported handguns that were a nightmare, so I can see your points. I shot one that would blow hot powder back in your face about every other shot. Had to clean my shooting glasses after every clip! I wouldn't want to shoot that one at night no matter WHAT powder was loaded!

I think that would be a step in the right direction from where we are today. Especially in the Left states.

I agree a lot depends upon the ammunition.

With a chest or hip hold, you may be too close to your opponent to bring the gun up and aim. You might be holding him off with your weak/offside hand while pulling out your handgun with the other hand, and rather than bring the handgun up where the opponent can grab it, you fire from the chest (not good) or hip (better). It takes practice.

You are right, but I was thinking of muzzle flip not recoil (couldn't you read my mind?)

Firearm selection is a personal thing and everyone has an opinion including me. I don't think there is a single answer. People should use what they are comfortable using.

(*)(*)(*)(*) folks, I am all for the 2nd Amendment but all I keep in the house is a 38 special and a couple boxes of bullets in case some Latin King or Crip gives me (*)(*)(*)(*).

An old 22 rifle from my grandpa (haven't bought any bullets since I am not handy with a long gun) and an SKS my dad took off a VC in Vietnam that probably doesnt work.

Never saw the need to keep different kinds of guns. Just keep a good pistol and a good long gun. Cuts down on the (*)(*)(*)(*) ammo you have to keep.

One would have to say, seeing the things you have claimed, that I am not the one presuming.

Get over yourself, son.
I already said I exaggerated for effect... A .357 probably WON'T shoot through an iron (aluminum, MAYBE) engine block...but regardless of that; it is more dangerous to innocent bystanders (blocks away or on the other side of the wall) in an urban situation due to its' power..continue to deny that and pretend superior knowledge if you like.

Let me get this straight, though...are you saying that a magnum load isn't as hot as a regular 9mm?
Using different bullets would account for different penetration in the gel and one could draw incorrect conclusions in ignorance...

Sorry, but I am not the one claiming it will go through 3 people but I am claiming that they have about the same penetration, so why do you think that is seeing how you think you have superior knowledge about these things?

I showed you sources. You insist on ignoring the sources and believing your bull(*)(*)(*)(*). Ignorance triumphs over re

Once again, don't confuse penetration with load performance. Many things determine the effectiveness of a round with penetration being only one part of the equation. If you are only looking at penetration, a .22 LR is going to give you similar if not better penetration.

However, penetration is the sole determining factor if one is going to claim a single bullet can pass through multiple people blocks away which is your claim.

I've owned and fired both weapons, mate. The SOB will most assuredly pass through 3 people. Would you be willing to be the third in line to test the theory?
Again...penetration into ballistic gel can be different according to which bullet type is fired, taking into account factors such a bullet shape, construction, design or tendency to tumble, mushroom or fragment.

Oh..ok I'm ignorant and my premise is bullXXXX..well, I can't argue with that...

False. Now you're claiming a .22 will penetrate the same amount as a .357

Child, please....

ummmm...re read..I never said it would pass through 3 people several blocks away...Here..for your edification..
So you distort and purposely misinterpret so you can come off sounding smart while you call me ignorant...ok..sure, ace..I understand now...

OK, what is the average measured velocity of a comparable 9mm +P (124gr) out of a standard carry weapon compared to a .357 (125gr) out of what people usually carry, a snub nosed revolver?

I can look all of that up...So what? Now you want to talk about muzzle velocity instead of penetration or bullet type.
Why choose a snub nose? Do the numbers work out in your favor that way?

Look..if you can't/won't admit that a .357 is more powerful than a 9mm or a .380...that's fine...carry on.

Well, you certainly haven't defended your claims.

A standard .22 round penetrating 11 inches. Well within the range of a .357. Seems like the only one acting childish here is you. Why don't you grow up?

Wow. So now you're going to lie your ass off to cover your ignorance? I said, and I quote, "nor will it kill several people several blocks away. Your reply, and I quote, was "Not true...It would easily pass through 2 or 3 people."

Now where did I distort or purposefull misreresent what you said?

Penetration depends on the weight and type of bullet along with the powder measure.

No (*)(*)(*)(*). The cross section of the bullet also has a lot to do with it. The .22 is much smaller than a .357 in diameter which gives it more penetrating power. Think light pick axe vs. heavy sledge hammer. They are both going to penetrate. The pick axe is going to penetrate easier but do less damage. The sledge hammer is going to penetrate but do massive damage.

Doesn't change the fact you can get equal or greater penetration with a .22 as I correctly stated. Is that true in every case? No. Does .357 penetration back up your BS about a .357 passing through 2 or 3 people several blocks away? No.

By the way, I notice you completely ignored the fact you falsely accused me of distorting and misrepresenting what you said. Why am I not surprised?
