what does Charlie Sheen have to do with this? how do you explain the 4 other dwarf plants, and that nothing beyond Saturn is visible w/o optics?
what's off track? he said it related to the planets and i called him on it. Neptune and Uranus aren't in the Koran so they don't exist.
Polygamy is a natural solution to some extreme environments, such as a nation always at war. I would condition that position on a woman's right to choose whether to enter or leave such a marriage. Arranged marriages for the sake of family financial security are little removed from selling a daughter into prostitution.
Leftysergeant has it right, polygamy is a natural solution in primitive society - although it is a bit unnecessary today. In primitive societies, females had little ability to care for themselves. They were physically too weak to protect themselves or to hunt (especially toward the end of a pregnancy), so they needed a male to take care of them. Meanwhile males tended to die off far more rapidly than females. Males went to war, hunted dangerous animals and protected the tribe - often dying in the process. So primitive societies often ended up with far more females than males and those females needed males to take care of them. Thus males would often take on several females, ensuring that all females had a male to take care of them and to allow them to reproduce.
My 2 pennies: Let women live in that situation if they wish, but don't make it something officially recognised, licensed and so on by the state. It's bad enough that the state is already involved in "marriage," as it leads inexorably to these problems of state and church stepping on each other's toes.
Pimpin' hoes might be fun, but you can't build a truly functional society around it. As much as the lower reptilian brain desires variety, it is important for the higher human component to put that desire in check at some point. Temperance is a virtue for a reason. It breeds strength. Strength creates growth. Growth furthers evolution.
Terminology. Marriage is a contract. It isn't anything other than adults entering an agreement. Religion has nothing to do with it unless the two parties want to make it a part of the equation.
If you want more wives, husbands, or both... who am I to stop you? I don't think it's wrong as long as it's consensual and you can provide for your resulting children.
Only problem with Polygamy is when creeps like Warren Jeffries start having sex with the kids of the wives. SICK!
Like gay marriage, I think it's wrong but, like gay marriage, I don't think it's the business of the federal government. Let people marry whoever a church will marry, but the (federal) government shouldn't have any involvement in it. There are complications, like with wills, but that is something that should be decided by the states. While I may not like their decision(s), I support the rights of the states to make any decisions on marriage that they so please.
Neither should the state. No government entity should be meddling in what contract consenting adults decide/choose to enter, only that a court is provided to assure the contracts are legal (no agreement that leads to death/killing, assaulting, stealing, destruction of personal/private/government property, etc... are not part of the contract) and binding, when all the stipulations are met, and properly terminated if there is a breach. Churches should have limited control over these issues unless the participants consent to their influence being involved.
the government's role is not to dictate the life-style of its citizens, people should be allowed to do whatever they want as long as it isn't directly harming anyone else. the collectivist philosophy at play, trying to maintain a 'system' of control, an 'institution', is bound to fail, as it has in the past and will continue to do. human nature is too strong to control, everyone is different, and people will maintain their differences no matter how controlling the 'system' tries to be. people can be controlled, but they cannot be controlled for long. polygamy, drugs, etc., are within the definition of personal freedom, and those who engage in those acts will not be controlled. laws against freedom are counter-productive, and costly to all members of society.
Anything that happens between consenting adults is fine with me... Although FTR my one woman is quite the handful for me. I cant imagine how one could do a good job as a partner with more...
