Living in a motel, my good man, is not being homeless. homeless is on the street. The posed photo (with the lady with nice makeup by the by) is child abuse because every state has accomodations for women with children.

WRONG it just gets Dumb and Dumber
The U.S. Army Lowers Recruitment Standards … Again.

& The problem of Homelessness occurs upon Discharge

One in Four Homeless are Veterans
    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21678030/ns/us_news-military/t/out-uniform-street/

Some advocates say such an early presence of veterans from Iraq and
Afghanistan at shelters does not bode well for the future. It took roughly a
decade for the lives of Vietnam veterans to unravel to the point that they
started showing up among the homeless. Advocates worry that intense and
repeated deployments leave newer veterans particularly vulnerable.

“We’re going to be having a tsunami of them eventually because the mental
health toll from this war is enormous,” said Daniel Tooth, director of veterans
    affairs for Lancaster County, Pa.

Compared to what I've seen,, these people look quite well off, well dressed (check out the kid's runners) and well nourished. I don't know, maybe the picture doesn't tell the entire sory.

    pov·er·ty (pvr-t)
    n.
    1. The state of being poor; lack of the means of providing material needs or comforts.

    That is poverty.

The government definition of poverty is an artificial and constantly changing amount of income. Those below that POLITICAL dollar figure are impoverished, according to the govt definition only. Those above that artificial amount are not impoverished, according to the govt.

The first post in this thread shows that the impoverished in the USA are certainly NOT living in poverty. The "poverty" children of the USA have swollen stomachs due to lazy parents and too many McD sliders and fries. Not swollen due to starvation.

US 2011 poverty level for a family of 4 $22,350.00

If we want to get a number of people out of 'poverty,' all we have to do is lower that arbitrary number to $12,000. Presto, Chango, thousands would no longer be in 'poverty.'

If a person makes $24,500.00 in Ohio, he is not in poverty. If he makes the same amount in Alaska or Hawaii, he is in poverty.

I am quite confident for the future. We are following the path of the Germans, who have one of the only productive economies in Europe.

The question is: does a productive economy such as Germany's prevent poverty?

Probably not when companies make the most profit when they underpay their workers and governments enable them to do so.

Which has noting to do with the point being made. Our "poor" are middle class throughout most of the world. Our poor tend to eat themselves to death. Our poor use cell phones, even their children. Go to a poor neighborhood and what do you see, an abundance of stores that rent fancy wheels for your car and nail and hair salons where the poor pay discretionary income on frivolous services.

Our "poor" do quite well here, they make money off the tax system, they get free section 8 housing, free medical care, free food, own homes, own cars, own cell phones and have discretionary income. In fact it is a job in itself being poor and working the system so that you lead a life that is the envy of most of the world. All off the money of some working stiff who gets up every morning and goes to work and than has to turn his money over to the government to pay for all the things the "poor" enjoy.

It's interesting that a lot of the cheaper food marketed to Americans, outside of vegetables and a few fruits, tends to be high-calorie and low-nutrition snack food and junk food and fast food. I would argue that current food options in the United States actually would work IN FAVOR of the poor becoming obese.

Throughout the West, healthy food is more expensive than heavily-processed industrial, high-calory, foods. Fact.

There is all kinds of food at all price levels. Our poor have abundant choices in the food they eat and the availability of the food they eat. And the fact remains our poor tend to eat themselves to death.

Compare that to poverty throughout the world.

Facts not in evidence, healthy food is not necessarily more expensive. I can by fresh vegetables and fruits lots cheaper than processed foods.

Our poor have many options in the food they CHOOSE to eat and they CHOOSE to eat a lot of it.

Compare that to the rest of the world.

In general -- there might be an exception or two -- healthy eating is just more expensive than eating unhealthy. That is the case so in Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, France, the UK, the USA, etc.

And not by a little -- healthy eating costs a whopping +1000% more (or: ten times more) than unhealthy eating.

How come you don't know this? It's common knowledge as far as I'm concerned.

There is also an other reason why poor people tend to be fatter. It has to do with time to work out, the cost of e.g. a gym subscription, membership fees, etc... It's not only about the food.

A High Price for Healthy Food

Nice that you would post an "EXCUSE" piece from the ultra left wing NYT.

I'm the chef in our house. I also do the shopping. Raw foods are considerably less expensive than processed foods. Even fresh frozen vegetables are less money than processed foods. The only time fresh veggies are expansive is when they are out of season and grody. When in season and large brightly colored and rich looking at the peak of freshness, they flood the market and are cheap.
Maybe in Europe unprocessed foods are expensive, but I very much doubt it as I do go in grocery stores to look around when I'm in Europe. And Farmers Markets abound in Europe.
What fast food has going here is that the lazy azzed mothers can feed that junk to the kids and get back to her soaps or rap music quicker.
Actual, real, fresh food cooking takes too much of her welfare empty time.

So "everybody" in poverty is a crack whore with too many kids, that has too many cell phones, a big screen TV w/Xbox and a Caddie in the drive, and let me get this straight, this is all made possible from being on welfare?

Just admit it you hate people who do not meet up to your expectations, abide by your standards & values, and/or are less superior to your own superior intellect. Go on admit it, it's true.
