Practical firearms discussion: size and weight considerations

My favorite Ruger "working gun" would be the GP100 in .357, with a 3-inch barrel, fixed sights, and perhaps a DAO with bobbed hammer trigger mechanism. Powerful enough for backwoods use, concealable enough for EDC.

I almost always pack. None around me would know. Other than making a choice of carry, not much different than selecting which pocket knife I will carry, once selected, I think no more of it than a watch, until it’s needed.
There is an exception... I never carry into any establishment or anywhere that I might imbibe in alcohol. If I happen to accidentally find myself in a potential drinking situation I either securely leave to stow my gun in my car safe or I don’t drink alcohol which I find is no loss.

 

I don't drink in public. I prefer to do any drinking I do (and I don't drink much) at home under controlled conditions, and the guns get put away when I do.

 

I used to have a .357 S&W 686. Fun gun to target shoot with.

It’s called being responsible and holding yourself accountable. An important trait that goes with being self reliant, independent, self aware and disciplined, something learned young and something to be passed on...all part of a bigger picture.
I just took a young fellow I have been mentoring to a gun show. I told him to watch how people handled guns; that alone tells you a lot about someone and it isn’t just knowing yourself, but knowing those about you.

 

Could you point me to his post? I have no problem calling out Turtledude or anyone else on this forum. I’ve called out people on BOTH sides of gun issues.

Honestly? In my opinion yes...it’s strange. Not saying you shouldn’t do it. If needing a gun on you in your own home makes you feel safe then by all means have at it.

 

Keeping a firearm holstered throughout the day involves far fewer physical and mental steps than repeatedly unholstering and reholstering it numerous times throughout the day. There is also the fact that continually unholstering a firearm can cause someone to forget it is not in their possession, such as when one may lay their keys down on the table and not think to physically grab them again when leaving.

Keeping a firearm holstered through the day is simply a much simpler, much easier activity to engage in for those involved. And as concealed carry is growing more popular in the united states, it makes sense that carry options will become more comfortable and less noticeable for the individual who has made the decision to carry a firearm in a legal manner. It is not about feeling safe, it is about basic convenience.

I tend to prefer the S&W's myself; I have a small collection of them, and they were my grandfather's preferred brand. I had a 2.5 inch 686 at one time that was a great little gun, but I sometimes think if I ever find myself with a lot of money burning a hole in my pocket I'd get a 681 and send it to someone like Ted Yost to convert it to a 3-inch fixed sight. That would be about the sexiest sixgun I could imagine; shy of a really nice custom Colt SAA!
