When the advance team went there there had been a snowstorm and the markings were covered.

    No one.

    Are myths all you got?

He went there as a courtesy to the German government, and when it was disclosed that a mere fraction of those enterned were Waggen SS infantry, after he had already agreed and the plans were in place, steps were taken to exclude those graves. It was a mere 8 minute stop added to his schedule of events at an International Conference.

Is this really all you have whine about?

It was a last minute add on to his schedule at the request of the German leader. It was close to the proceedings. You seem to be under the impression it was the entire purpose of his trip there.

He did not lay flowers on SS Graves.

This article is from that visit

By BERNARD WEINRAUB, Special to the New York Times
Do you give Reagan credit for this visit?

The brewing controversy was no secret long before the trip …

Had "Bonzo" and/or his handlers and sponsors cared at all, there was plenty of time to either cancel or change the plan ...

A "spur of the moment event" (of little to no real supposed necessity) could just as easily be cancelled and some *excuse* given … But ...

As it was, an international figure -- Elie Wiesel -- pleaded with "Gipper" not to go there …
But being a sock upper empty suit playing roles written by others, with no significant moral courage or conviction of his own (who cares about a few dead Nazis, who were "victims," too … ???) … "Gipper" did as OTHERS arranged for him ...

Bonzo? I thought this thread was about Reagan, let Bonzo finish his term and then recap the destruction he caused.

    go to:
Reagan visits concentration camp and war cemetery - May 5, 1985 - HISTORY.com

    from the article …

"At an American airbase later that day, after having been told of the SS troops buried at Bitburg, Reagan shared his regret over the visit, saying it had, 'opened old wounds.' Reagan's advisors later admitted that the Bitburg visit was a fiasco that had tarnished the president's image."

    Hmmmmmm …

    "Bonzo's" advisors screwed up …
"Bonzo" had no idea what he was doing that day … He was a sock puppet playing a role written by others ...

I told what Reagan said when one advisor told him there was S.S. also buried there. He said he made a promise to the German Canceler that he would and wouldn't back out of a promise. The Canceler should have never asked him to do that.

On April 19, WEEKS before the infamous Bitburg fiasco, Elie Wiesel pleaded in public with President "Gipper" to change his mind … (reported in The New York Times) …

Instead, in cowardly (sock puppet) fashion, "Gipper" proceeded as his handler-sponsorts had arranged and only later understood that it had been a terrible mistake …
If he had had a conscience and/or half a brain, he could/would have done what was RIGHT … But instead ...

The controversy came within a month of the visit and they never planned on cancellation. They took care not to give any notice of those 49 graves, of 17 and 18 year old's who were forced into the SS and not considered war criminals.

And BTW Reagan didn's play the part of Bonzo.

    Wrong …

The infamous stupidly planned intentional visit to the Nazi SS graves took place on May 5, 1985 …

On April 19, in his visit to The White House to receive The Congressional Gold Medal of Achievement, Elie Wiesel publicly pleased with "Bonzo" not to go to Bitburg …

"That place, Mr. President, is not your place. Your place is with the victims of the SS."

The "Bonzo" Administration had fully more than two weeks to cancel the Bitburg visit …

If "Bonzo" had had even half an ounce of True Grit moral courage, decisive leadership inclination, he could have changed the plan …
But instead, he -- sock puppet empty suit -- "followed orders" of his handler-sponsors …
He was a moral midget who made the world safe for nutmeg ...

The visit was on May 5th, the controversy a mere 16 days before the visit.

Have you ever read or studied anything about the last days of Hitler and his rule over Germany?

Right, the G9 summit was years in planning, this was added as a courtsey to the Germany chancellor, and knowing you would argue that point I amended my post to reflect that the controversy didn't come until April 19th, a mere 16 days before the planned visit.

Tell do you think we should never have reconciled with Germany nor should we ever acknowledge that a huge portion of the German population suffered under Hitler?

Look … Especially in the "Gipper" Cult, "Ronnie" was the most powerful man in the world, full of wisdom and deep knowledge, who changed the course of world history …

If "Gipper" had known or cared anything at all about the history of WWII, Nazi Germany, The Holocaust, The SS, etc., he could and would have ORDERED a change in the plan …

But, yes …Unlike "Gipper," I am a student of history … What do you want to know … ???

I have a good friend who was a young girl in Germany during WWII …
Her dad, a Wehrmacht soldier, was killed on the Eastern Front … Neither he nor his family were Nazis nor did they -- nor do they -- have any sympathy for the NAZIS …

Ahhhhh … Now you are trying to cast wise/smart/decisive "Gipper" as a hapless "victim" of his handlers-sponsors-schedulers …
He was a moral midget sock puppet empty suit ...

Grade-B "Bonzo" acted his role on a stage set and directed by others … giving lines he was fed by others …

"We're doing everything we can … " -- Nancy and her astrologer …

"Gipper" -- with feeling -- to Elie Wiesel -- "Nazi, schmazi … "

As the soildiers buried at Bitburg

    "Merging Past and Present

Mr. Reagan's visit to Bergen-Belsen, in addition to the Kolmeshohe Cemetery at Bitburg, was designed to merge past and present - to pay homage to the millions of victims of Nazi Germany and to honor West Germany's emergence as a powerful democracy and ally of the United States.

''We who were enemies are now friends,'' Mr. Reagan told about 5,000 American military personnel, their families and local German residents at the Bitburg Air Base, less than one mile from the military cemetery.

''We who were bitter adversaries are now the strongest of allies,'' Mr. Reagan said. ''In the place of fear we have sown trust, and out of the ruins of war has blossomed an enduring peace.''"

    http://www.nytimes.com/1985/05/06/international/europe/06REAG.html

And guess what, there were certainly more former German military alive in Germany, the Germany we were honoring as a modern strong ally. Should he have not gone to Germany at all?
