Context and intent is always important, without context words are meaningless and it's possible to use the worst racist words you ever heard in conversation without ever actually being racist just as it's possible to be racist just with a facial expression whilst saying the nicest things.

I have plenty of black friends (I hate the term I think of them as just friends the distinction is uncomfortable for me) we have used far worse words over the last 30 years especially when we were kids as kids are bastards.

Language is contextual and both the hard left and hard right forget that.

I don't know of any person, of any color originating from any continent who sees the word wigger as a racial slur. These days everything has a name which describes something, wigger is one of those names.

Wigger, or wigga, is a slang term for a white person, typically middle to upper-class, and of European ethnic origin, who emulates the perceived mannerisms, language, and fashions associated with African-American culture, particularly hip hop.[1]

The phenomenon of white people adopting stereotypical black mannerisms, speech, and apparel – which in the general case is called allophilia

Since it's based on a racial slur, I fail to see how it can be seen any other way.

Regardless if a term is socially viewed as abhorrent or not, the fact remains any word used to demean others is unethical and morally wrong. The fact the N-word, upon which "wigger" is based, is seen as okay by some and wrong for others is racist in itself. Not just for the word, but because some people seek to approve it's use for some and disallow it's use by others. IMHO, as noted with "wigger", it's wrong for all to use.

Wigger is not demeaning and the origins of the word make no difference relative to the actual meaning of the word which is totally acceptable. So you and I will have to agree to disagree on this.

    How about this one:
    Colored people = racist
People of color = totally acceptable

Based upon your last post the origins of the words are what make them racist, well, these are the exact same words merely arranged in a different order. I see no problem using either phrase, but society has deemed otherwise.

    Number 4, which everyone forgets but Maher;

"I've already BEEN fired " Maher is on HBO,

Which is where I''m quite certain we will see Roseanne in a month or two, if Fox doesn't get her first.

ABC probably still had her on an "unbreakable" contract from years ago.

I'll bet this whole thing was Maher's idea

Sorry for being unclear, but that's not what I meant. It's how words are used that makes them racist, not their history.

And perceived. Mostly societal. If enough people starting thinking the word black was racist then it basically becomes racist. Racism seems to be in the eye of the beholder so if enough people say it’s racist what can you do? It’s when emotion instead of logic drive societal norms.

"If enough people start thinking the word XXX was racist" isn't emotion, it's how thing work. Why are Carlin's "seven words you can't say on television" those words? Like he said, they're just words.

My objection is not the word, but how it's used. If, as you stated "black" was socially thought to be racist, then anyone who uses it in a hurtful way is racist....even if it's just two friends throwing the term at each other.

I don't know, I didn't invent the term. Maybe he acts likes he's a cornerback in the NFL.

    Maybe, maybe not

    I treat people with respect.

Have you ever seen those pictures of animals that look like their owners? Strangely enough, those owners are always white.

So how do you use a term and you don't know what it is. How does a cornerback act?

I have no interest in whether Maher is fired or why, but his reported recognition of the vulgar Trump as an orangutan is a fake pretext for doing so. Given that Trump is regarded as human, and that orangutans may be the closest living things to humans genetically, sharing 97% DNA, his identification is highly accurate.

That racists want him fired is something his employer will consider, no doubt, but Maher's being an anti-Muslim bigot is a far more legitimate excuse to call for his dismissal if that is what some folks like to do.

Exactly. Making a fetish of feelings and pets (identities) is the stuff of bored Kings, too long well fed and safe inside the castle walls. It's actually quite grotesque, when measured against universal humanity's current state.

We have far too much: free time, repose, food, and safety. We have become vain children, playing at the eugenics of personality.

You're out of touch with Gen Z. They are showing signs of being more conservative than their parents, and they're very multicultural. You guys seem always to be stuck in 1999. Or 2001. Not sure which.

PS: you might want to look into why the youngens are saying "hold on a minute now .. let's take a look at this ideology before running with it just 'cause". You might also want to ask yourself how much you really know about how Asians in the west. I can guarantee that the majority are very conservative.

    Believe what you like.

I trust that America's emerging electorate - better-educated, more diverse, less intolerant of racial, religious, and sexual orientation differences - with more female candidates from which to choose, will result in progress for the nation. Younger Republicans already being more liberal on climate change and immigration is especially encouraging.
