Go back and read what I wrote.

The UK also has very distinct regional accents (which can even be indecipherable to those from other regions), but ALL people in any given region will have the same accent - regardless of ethnic heritage. It's the normal osmosis of accents that we're all given to. The only way a group can acquire or retain an accent which varies from that of the region, is to isolate themselves almost completely from the broader community, or to deliberately develop a preferred variant. Both of those scenarios being arguably anti-social.

You raise a very interesting, enigmatic point which I had never considered before! Why, indeed, do American Blacks speak in such a readily identifiable manner? In America, with very few exceptions, Blacks do use an almost immediately identifiable dialect or 'accent' -- and often with a remarkably different vocabulary!

I can listen to a person speaking on TV (without seeing the image on the screen), for instance, even on something as trivial and inconsequential as a game show, like "Wheel of Fortune", and determine if the voice I'm hearing is that of an American Black person. There are many such voices to sample from on game shows in this country, because even though Blacks make up less than 14% of the population, they appear on televised American game shows in numbers that I estimate at approximately 30% - 35%. However, this does not appear to be the case on a game show like "Jeopardy"....

But, I cannot determine the race of a Black person on a British TV show merely by hearing the voice! :confusion:
