Should Blacks be paid "reparations" today because of slavery in the United States?

You call it long ago, because maybe you're in your teens for all I know. It aint that long ago when people who are still alive and working benefitted 1st hand of being 1st class and others who are also still alive received the short end of the straw. Trump and Biden are just an example of people who profited 1st hand from being 1st class citizens in the apartheid era of the US.

Nothing is odd about an old Jew getting compensated for being treated more than awfully in the 1940-1945. But somehow black people who got legally oppressed because of their skin color in the US -till 20 years after 1945- are getting the middle finger from people who profited from it. It's appalling. You can say all you want that under the law we're all equal now... but a person deprived from economic opportunities from getting 2nd class education etc and so lives in poverty can't turn back the time.... they can only look at people who fully profited from exploiting being 1st class citizens back in the day live exceptionally well off and able to infest their fortune gained from those days in their children.

And you show zero empathy to that with you dragging in the end of the civil war as if the Jim Crow era did not happen. You saying you marched around in the 60's seems not really plausible doesn't seem likely because of that.

Demographic change in the US means you will be running out of White people to guilt trip. You won't be able to convince Latinos and Asians they ought to give money to Blacks.

 

There's an evil part of me that laughs inside at the forthcoming likelihood that the next big racial uproar is going to be Blacks versus impoverished 'migrant' Latinos as they fight over who gets the larger slices of the 'welfare pie'.

Hint: The United States is going to be INUNDATED with swarms of 'migrant' Latino peasants, coming across the border all the way from the tip of South America, during the next four years -- and these 'migrants' are going to want that particularly huge percentage of the 'welfare pie' that Blacks have enjoyed since the 1960's.

Ooh, make the popcorn and get an extra case of beer -- this is going to be worth watching -- and it's already starting less than 100 days after Biden took over!

I never have been to Detroit thank god, but I was living in Oakland, CA for a few years and watched it go to hell. My folks moved to Hayward, CA and over time as the population quit being white, saw it go to hell too.'

And in a pragmatic sense, you're probably right. By the time liberal, White Democrats start their hard-core pandering to the onrushing 'migrant' hordes, American-citizen Blacks may get completely taken for granted and pushed aside....

It is a big issue to consider. Certainly racism has persisted since slavery was ended and Blacks have been impacted significantly by that, often in ways we privileged white folk simply do not understand.

On the other hand, I'm sure quite a few are just jockying to get a handout. I'd be excited at the prospect of receiving a pile of cash just for being of the right ethnic background.

 

As soldiers in the U. S. Army of the Potomac (the Union Army), those Black soldiers were paid, too. For Black soldiers, the United States Army base pay was $10/month, minus $3/month for uniforms. In contrast, White soldiers received $13 per month from which no clothing allowance was drawn. No big generosity from Abraham Lincoln for his newly-liberated Black soldiers!

All soldiers in the Civil War were paid to serve, although I believe that those in the officer ranks had to supply their own uniforms, and that practice was common in Great Britain and France, too....

 

I seen Oakland become a S**thole also. I lived in Concord for awhile and always became leery when I had to go to Oakland. Most big cities at one time were not bad places to live and were reasonably safe. I live in Virginia Beach now and the areas around us are becoming quite violent. We have a large Beach and during the day it is a family beach but when night falls it becomes a place where a family would be wiser to stay close to their hotel. Our morning paper had a article in it that one of our local jail leads the nation in murder over the last 10 years. (Norfolk)

 

How about the White soldiers who fought for the North? When my dad came back from WW II he was suppose to get $300 from the state of Michigan. He never did. Do you think the state should give me and my sisters reparations. Isn't going to happen. My sister's husband worked for the city of Detroit and when he retired he received a reduce pension because the city filed for bankruptcy. I send her money once in awhile so can make ends meet. The states can't even take care of their own so how the hell are they going to be able to afford reparations. Should reparations be paid to wealthy blacks? Should successful black business like Darden's (Red Lobster) and B.E.T. have to pay up for reparations? Do you think the American Indian should be paid reparations first before blacks?

 

Even Concord, CA has hit the skids. Norfolk VA has as well.

In the film "Glory" the Black soldiers protested until they got paid the same as White soldiers. Was the film not accurate?

 

This nation exists on multiple myths. One is that Abe was not a racist. Abe definitely was what is called now, a racist. He stood firm that blacks shall not vote. Not marry other than blacks. Not have citizenship. His solution was to ship them to Africa or to the Caribbean or to Central America. Blacks played a very minor role in the civil war.

 

I have no idea whether or not the "Glory" film makers were accurate or not.

Hollywood typically uses a lot of 'poetic license' in its productions, and of course, there's always a certain amount of 'spin', one way or the other, to favor one viewpoint or another, 'good' or 'bad'....

 

Woke up this morning and headlines on National News 10 people shot and at least 2 dead in Virginia Beach. When I was a young man the area was my old drinking grounds. Always been a area for a little confrontation but really bad now.

 

Yeah I saw that yesterday. Some good times were had in that area by myself some years back.

 

Was there a 'racial' context to the violence in Virginia Beach? If there was, the "news" media isn't saying.

Not sure how this is related to 'reparations' for Blacks because of slavery in the 1800's, but these days, who the hell knows...? It seems like everybody is mad about everything, all the time....

When I was young (back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth), young guys went to these things to get drunk, and get laid. Life was simpler then....

 

Too bad they couldn't make a rule that forbid White men from having sex with African slave women. They really liked chocolate from what I hear.
There were 3 regiments of Black soldiers who were very important to the Union: the 1st and 2nd South Carolina and the 54th Massachusetts. I don't believe they were "minor" players.
