Not only today but since the church started in the 1st century the early church to today has always been a place of sanctuary.

In the Middle ages the church was the only institution that prevented Europe from falling into chaos it stopped the mob rule preventing the unwarranted, systematic persecution of anyone accused of crimes including witchcraft without the church millions of innocent lives would have been put to death by out of control radicals. The church introduced modern science, medicine and judicial procedure educated the illiterate Europe all these to become a modern and prosperous civilization.

The Founding fathers of the USA coined their declaration under Christian doctrine to protect against abused by people of power including abused of church powers they saw how England has used God as an excused to exert unjust taxation against the colonies the founding fathers promoted separation of Church and State. Sadly, the same founding fathers would not accord the same rights to the American Indians.

Because somehow telling people they can't teach their kids religion isn't of itself an attempt to indoctrinate and brainwash children.

Letting children think for themselves is not indoctrination. It is a good idea.

Is it abuse to teach children lies like the notion of a supernatural God who has condemned the vast majority of his friends to hell?
