General question about this thread (I'm still learning the ropes here).

The title is "Smarties Bar & Grill #68." Are we to infer that there were 67 "Smarties . . ." before this one?

Correct. Welcome to the forum. Once threads reach a certain length (10,000 posts?) they become too unwieldy for the software to handle and the thread is closed.

Yes, indeed, WestFork. This site used to have a limit on how big threads could be before you had to start another one. Thus the 67 previous Smarties. They seem to have relaxed that rule... possibly avoiding #69. ;)

It is a shame that we can't raise our own food the animals would sure have a better life and be a whole lot healthier.
But we can't kill them either so we just have hens for eggs. We took a break from hens though. It feels funny buying eggs from store now.

They look and feel like a big tan ball of wax. I just bought two of them this week. They are very hard to cut up.

Is it a lot of work and expense raising chickens?

I've been contemplating doing it down the road some time but I'd have to build a fully enclosed chicken fortress to keep all the predators out. We've got everything from snakes to owls to just about every four-legged critter to worry about out here...

Thanks for the explanation. This thread is quirky, offbeat, and not just a little weird at times. It's a welcome change from the predictable harangues on political boards.

We have caught many a snakes in our pens but all they do is eat the eggs. We take them out to the woods and if they keep coming back and are poison we kill them. Only killed one and it was a rattle snake that kept striking at us with its rattlers going.
The prep is the hardest then it is easy to keep preditors out. We lay down cheap cattle fence flat on the ground 2 ft. in and 2 ft. outside. Then we put a up 4ft. welded wire over it. Nothing can dig in or out. Cover roof with chicken wire so birds won't eat the food.
But we have raised chickens for over 30 years and not one has been killed by a fox, panther, wild dog, etc,. All our chickens are free range till night then they go into pen to roost and lay eggs when they want to.
Next time we buy chickens it will only be 3 or max 4 hens for eggs we always had too many.

From what I've watched and seen a Rattler's poison works kinda quickly
and within an hour parts of yer body go numb. You can't move yer legs.
Plus even when a Rattler's head is cut completely off, they can still
    bite.

We live in Copperhead Central so I know what that's like. Usually they mind their own business but I had to shoot an unusually aggressive one last year. They scare me about as bad as the black bears that wander through here now and then.

Thanks, GW - that's some helpful advice. Laying fence down on the ground was something I didn't think about.

I've heard a dead copperhead can pull that nasty little trick off, too, but I've never been stupid enough to find out for myself.

We are very careful moving them. I don't live in Ga. anymore but I grew up in Atlanta and Stone Mountain Ga.. Both are full of snakes especially Stone Mountain area.
We swam with Moccasins in our lake and even had a couple stand up and stair me in the eyes while I was stomping rugs over a flat rock in the creek. Mama got both of them with her S&W 38. She was a Calaminty Jane wannabe I guess and always practiced with her Pearl Handle and kept it by her side for protection.
Only person in the family to get bit was my mother. And that was inside the car. She pushed in the clutch to kick it off and the rattler bit her on the leg she opened up car door shook it off her leg and said " you'll walk now you sob", She almost lost her leg. I was crying begging her to go to doctor, she did 3 days later when her leg was terribly swollen and infected.
We would jump over snakes or run across them all the time in the woods. Closest I came to getting bit was drinking water from the spring our 10 acre lake was spring fed and 45ft deep in the middle. I was on my knees drinking and a huge snake was over my head, that one scared me. It was a wonderful life.

I like to pass good advice and what really works around. I get it from others and give it back to others. We did make the pen higher to walk in though. We we added another 4ft to height.
It seems like a lot of work but it last forever and once done it is done. lol. We concrete in the post of course and they hang in there.

About 10 years ago a man at the Springs was drinking and saw a snake swimming near a bunch of kids. he runs out grabs the snake out of the water and it bit him several times and sadly, he was dead before the ambulance got there. I wasn't there but heard they kept telling him to drop the snake.

I've read that before, but I'll read it again. If she thinks he isn't attracted to her, there is a bigger problem than how clothing is fitting. If he thinks she is still hot, he will be doing something about it. She won't need to ask if he is flirting with her and chasing her around the home once in a while or more. She will let him catch her when she wants.

Now realize. It doesn't have to be literal chasing. A few sweet comments. A look she notices. A little sexy talk, etc.

In other words, you, as the partner, have not done your due diligence. If you are doing these things, and she feels like she isn't wanted, she has a problem. See, you already blamed yourelf in this scenario. You must do your job and then you can eliminate your part and quit thinking it's all you.

You can't manipulate her feelings. You must be genuine.

I do appreciate the suggestions. I'm one of those types that insists on doing things right the first time and being done with it.

Wow. If your mom could hit a snake with a .38 I'd say she was a Calamity Jane of sorts. I'm no deadeye so I always play it safe and use a shotgun on those critters. Knowing my luck I'd just wing one with a revolver and wind up getting bit.

Well she did a few times and she was a good shot. I was washing the Lords Last Supper wall rug and singing a song I made up 'stomp the bread but don't stomp the wine' and she was saying I was getting the hell beat out of me for blasphemy about the time two snakes came out from that rock stood of their tails and looked me right in the eyes. She said don't move [ I knew not to ] And she shot one and the other one came towards her and she hot that one too. I didn't get that ' beating' she promised though. We had escaped prisoners hide in the woods sometimes so she always carried.

There were two, "don't wear it " or " it looks great wear it". Mostly I just wore what I wanted to and didn't ask for opinions. But the best reply I got was probably 'everything looks good on you ' by my husband.
