Well, if I am feeling generous, I give Torchwood's run on Starz a 6 out of 10. Very very uneven storytelling.

I'm enjoying Doctor Who this year as well. Love Rory and Amy. And River. Cannot imagine how they will end it this season!

Sorry about the flooding. I was fortunate and had no damage from the hurricane and the rains. Others, not so much. :(

    Good mornin' everybody!

Cheeseburgers from the new In-N'-Out on 75, and I'm in!

So... continuing yesterday's nautical theme - here are some terms that you can incorporate into your vocabulary to impress your landlubber friends --

There are 32 points on a ships compass - North, North by East, North -northeast, Northeast by North, Northeast, Northeast by east, East-Northeast, East by North, East, etc... Being able to name all 32 points is called "boxing the compass", and is the hallmark of a good sailor.

Anywhere a sail contacts a hard part of a ship (a mast, for example) chafing will occur, and a hole will wear in the sail - which, left unchecked, will cause the sail to rip when the sails are unfurled and the ship is under sail. In order to prevent this, a section of old rope that has been cut and made to resemble a piece of shag carpet is used. This section of rope is referred to as a "baggywrinkle".

Finally, the vertical post that a sail is attached to is the "mast", the tallest on on a ship (usually in the center of the ship) is referred to as the "mainmast".

How does this relate to everyday life, you ask? Simple! Should you ever happen to become intimately involved with a sailor, tell him to be sure to put a baggywrinkle on his mainmast, and then you'll box the compass with him. Any old salt will understand exactly what you mean, and you'll both have a wonderful time! :D

Interesting stuff, SC! We toured the Elissa when we were in Galveston. Very impressive sailing ship!

“Elissa is nearly unique among historic ships in that she sails,” said John Moran, longtime volunteer leader at the Texas Seaport Museum. “She is not only fully restored to sailing condition, but she has a large crew of volunteers who are trained and eager to sail her. She represents the maritime history of Texas. That’s why it’s important to take her to other seaports more often, to show the flag and gain wider support than just Galveston.” ELISSA's last port visit was to Corpus Christi in October of last year.

I have seen those fids before. A long time ago I lived in an area where they were building a replica HMS type ship. They had volunteers doing it. The guys had those tucked in some kind of a belt thing.

Thats great information SC. Thanks I never heard of a shellback or a pollywog used in those terms before. So what do you think of the ships lost in the Bermuda Triangle or strange reports of compass problems? Just curious. You think its crazy or some kind of magnetic anomaly?

My favorite sandwich is fried steak sandwich with fried vadalia onions and mushrooms. Sliced provolone melted cheese on a Portuguese roll. On the side. Sliced tomato, garlic, basil, olive oil and grating cheese. Madonna Mia!

I just had my lunch. pan grilled salmon with sauteed onions and peas.

It was good, but can't stand up to a steak sandwich OR a reuben.....

[IMG]It looked like this but no rice and a LOT of peas.....

I get the butcher to slice up some top round really thin and fry it with onions and mushrooms. Its excellent and really tender. They have to slice it thin and dont over cook it. Man its a great sandwich!

Lets see so far I had a piece of toast with buttah and about 7 cups of coffee. Im making pesto with whatever macaroni I have home and a garden salad for dinner. Im not big on pesto. I am craving a tuna and tomato sandwich so Ill probably have that for dinner.

That salmon looks great. I love salmon.
