It's not 1940 anymore. Conventional warfare, as expensive as it is......... would still be futile against China. How many billion people do they have anyway? That's why our occupation/protection won't work against them. If it comes to conflict, we'll probably just end up turning each other into glass. It will be a star wars game.

I don't normally agree with Pants, but he is probably right. What's not shown here is another 15% in province taxes. No way, no how that got incorporated into that chart. That's oppressive! Even for CA and NY.

Bingo. Which is why it’ll never get to that point. The days of world powers invading and conquering other countries are over.

According to this chart, Canada and the US have about the same tax burden, yet Canada's healthcare wait times are far greater than the US.

I dont want to occupy china

If its not 1940 its not the 19th Century of humilation of china either

But virtually any chinese student or man on the street can tell you all about how china suffered at the hands of foreigners

They have not forgotten or forgiven it

The chinese communist party is still dedicated to the original goals of world domination that it has always had

The outlier for the US would be the military but also other costs are unique to America - extremely high (comparatively) prison populations for example. There are almost 6 times as many people incarcerated in the US as in Canada. At 30 - 60K per prisoner per year that number adds up. In addition to the direct cost of prisoner holding there's the loss of productivity of that prisoner while they are incarcerated.

The idea with NATO is that no one country has to foot more than their share. The presence of such a large force is itself a deterrent. The US is spending almost 3.5% of GDP. That could be easily dropped to 2% with no risk in defensive capabilities.

Neither do I, nor did I think you did. But bases and troops in the Middle East (other than keeping the canal open) , Germany, Italy, the Pacific, and where ever else.........is pointless anymore, unless it's a strategic place to launch from. The Chinese are no better than the muslims, or different in that regard. Best we keep them out of the US and let them ride herd elsewhere. And when that fateful unavoidable day comes, if ever, obliterate them.

This brings up another point. We should ban the Chinese from attending our universities and stealing our intellectual properties. That's REALLY what this trade is about, or should be.

Nothing in the way of a link, no. As I've stated, twice, my experience comes from conversation with many Canadians who feel they pay too much in taxes.

Sure, whatever you say. I'm sure Canadians are flooding the border crossings rushing to pay 4 times the healthcare costs with high deductibles.

    Don't make **** up.

Canadians go south across the border into the US to get procedures done that would normally take months in Canada...

Are all libs as simple-minded as the ones posting here?

Most of the time china will use its military advantage to bully weaker country

Just the threat of military force will usually get china what it wants

But maybe not in the case of Taiwan

They are in real danger of invasion

Ah - I get it now - you're Canadian. And I'm sorry if I offended you, truly. How do you feel about Canada's taxation rates?

the top statutory tax burden in Canada is 5 points higher than the US. And that doesn't include consumption

    https://stats.oecd.org/index.aspx?DataSetCode=TABLE_I7

But you are correct, none of them have built the most powerful military in history with a mandate of global power projection.

The military is 16% of our budget.

We spend far, far more on "butter" than "guns".
