Terror - explosion at Russia railway station

At least 13 people were killed Sunday by an explosion at a railway station in southern Russia, officials said, heightening concern about terrorism ahead of February's Olympics in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.
Russia's Interior Ministry said the explosion hit the central railway station in the city of Volgograd, approximately 425 miles to the northeast of Sochi. Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee released a statement saying that a female suicide bomber was suspected of carrying out the attack.
Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the nation's top investigative agency, the Investigative Committee, said that at least 13 people died in the blast. Russia's Health Ministry said about 50 people were injured.
The Russian news agency Interfax quoted a source that said the explosion occurred near metal detectors at the station's entrance. A witness told the agency that he saw two bodies lying in front of the entrance, surrounded by shattered glass and rubble.
Footage by a security camera facing the station that was broadcast by Rossiya 24 television showed the moment of explosion: a bright orange flash inside the station behind the main gate followed by plumes of smoke.

The television showed a lineup of ambulances outside the station, and several motionless bodies placed on the pavement.

Provinces in southern Russia have been destabilized by attacks linked to Islamic rebels.
In October, a female suicide bomber blew herself up on a city bus in Volgograd, killing six people and injuring about 30. Officials said the attacker came from the province of Dagestan, which has become the center of an Islamist insurgency that has spread across the region after two separatist wars in Chechnya.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack, but it came several months after Chechen rebel leader Doku Umarov called for attacks on the Sochi Games.
On Friday, three people died in the city of Pyatigorsk in the North Caucasus Mountains when a car rigged with explosives blew up on a street in Pyatigorsk, the central of a federal administrative district intended to stabilize the North Caucasus region.

It would be a mistake for the Russian Islamist to attack the Olympics anyway. They would see massive police or military response over the coming years.

I dislike islamism and see it as a plaque for the civilized world. But when it goes against russian tyranny i have no problem seeing those black widows as freedom fighters. Go girls! Give them hell!

Germany and the EU as a whole are not part of the chechens agenda. Russia is a direct enemy of our international goals and interests as you can see in Ukraine. I don´t say we should support them, their behavior is uncivilized and as i said, i see islamism as threat. But in this case they weaken our enemy, so it is best ignored. Its a simple logic: "the enemy of my enemy is my friend".

Chechenya is protrayed as a victim of russian tyranny in german media. There was a documentation in TV here about those "black widows" and they were shown as victims of russian barbarity and agression.

 

Religious fanaticism knows no borders. The article in the OP lead me to conclude that the Islamist in Chechnya are not planning an attack but encouraging other Islamist in the Sochi area to carry them out. If they are successful with this train attack or with an attack on the Olympics, then maybe they will start trying to carry out attacks on your trains again. Didn't they try that unsuccessfully not too many years ago?

 

Our secret service is actually a working one and was able to counter any single attack targeted on germany on german soil. I have 100% trust in our institutions. Beside that, i´m against terrorism of any form. But russia is our enemy. Look how they try to push Ukraine away from the contract we plan with them. Russia only troubles our plans and evrything could be much easier if russia wasn´t there. Of course i want safe olympic games, but i certainly don´t want a propaganda sucess for russia. Understandable, right?

Not really. Your position still seems to add up that you hope that there is a successful terrorist attack on the Olympics because you don't like Russia. That you consider them an enemy over business seems even more odd a position to me. I am an American. I don't consider Russia our enemy. We simply have competing interests. Sometimes they win. Sometimes we win. Just how the world divided into nation states works. I wouldn't want anybody's blood spilled over business profits, even my worst enemy's.

 

I never said i want terrorists attack anyone. I said and made clear i see those things as barbaric. I want safe olympic games and i believe they should never have been given to russia in the first place. That said, as i already said...russia hurting our interests...just look at Ukraine. Do you think it is fun to pull that show now? Our government worked years to make that contract and in last days Putin corrupts it...now we have to support opossition and so on and thats just annoying and a waste of rescources. It could have been much easier than now. And i don´t want anyones blood spilled as well...But i can tell you in russia nobody would care if that would be our blood. Russians have 0 value for human life.
