It states in the link -

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the Autopilot system can give drivers a false sense of security

A Tesla also gives the owner the false sense of security that they're saving the planet too.

Mostly user error. Most cars have upgraded cruise control that mostly "drives for you"...MOSTLY. You still have to be alert, but it can and WILL keep you a safe distance from cars in front AND steer very well for you on a highway. I could easily let a Toyota go for hours on cruise from the 80s down to crawling traffic and never touch the wheel or brake. STUPID!!! But it can do it.

No one is forcing you to buy electric. Even though they may stop building ICE in mass production in some states 10 yrs from now, one will still be able to purchase and drive one.

I’d love to hop in a car and not have to pay attention. Nap. Pass out after too many adult beverages. Watch Netflix and eat breakfast on the way to work. The possibilities are endless!

Its an ideal for sure, but not happening anytime soon. Still too many variables and EXPENSIVE, especially liability.

You raise a good question; if the car is doing the driving can a person get nailed for drunk driving? I'm betting they can, but a lawyer somewhere will eventually use that argument.

They are already here. There are 92 electric car manufacturers in the USA. Most likely many will go away, but they are here to stay.

Oh the companies exist, but there is still a major gap in price and chargers. Only really good for those with homes and their own hook up, ATM. It might get there one day, but its going to be some time. And Lithium and other metals required which are NOT as plentiful as oil.

It depends. Just like everything else there is a risk/reward ratio you have to figure out over time. Statistically, self driving vehicles are already “better drivers” than the average human. For those of us that enjoy driving it’s going to be different than for those who hate it and aren’t good at it.

I’ve been using self driving technology in tractors for about 20 years. Of course the technology has improved. As a teenager and young man, before self driving technology, I took pride in being able to drive a nice straight line. But the first day of running self driving technology, even the old stuff, destroys that pride by showing how inadequate human abilities are compared to technology. There’s not even any comparison.

The biggest problem with autonomous vehicles and self driving technology is reliability of components. Sensors are the weak link. When one sensor goes down the system necessarily goes down until that sensor is replaced and functional. Annoying in a tractor. A disaster when a sensor in your car ends up shutting down an entire freeway until a technician can remedy the situation.

The amazing thing to me is that there are 2 million Teslas on the road. In fact there are 3 million.
