The greatest country in the world? Hardly.

I don't know which is worse, the total lack of compassion in jailing this guy when he should have been given money out of the poor box.

..Or the cost of jailing him for Thirteen years, probably at around $50,000 per year. That money would have been much better spent on rehabilitation and training.

Next question? How many more like him are in your prisons?????

    As always, the compassionate American.

Congressmen and women screw the taxpayer year after year - not only do they not get a jail sentence but they are re-elected as a bonus.

There's no such thing as the 'greatest' country in the world, just as there is no 'greatest' ice cream flavor in the world, since 'greatness' is a completely subjective term.

We are the most powerful country in the world, though. Don't think there's any quarrel with that.

More than can be counted. The only thing America likes more than guns is sending people to jail, whether or not they deserve it

    America loves its jails

Take away the spin and you have an crackhead that has attempted to take what is not his three times.

We may have saved a life with him behind bars for the last eight years, we may now see someone die due to so called compassion.

There is no reason to break into a church for food, there are plenty of places to get it free, it is entirely possible he broke in to steal money.

People who feel the need to wallow in anti-Americanism reveal more about themselves than they perhaps realize.

Three strike laws are absurd. Why are we basing sentencing procedures on a baseball metaphor?

Perhaps you missed the part where he robbed two other people. If the guy made bad decisions because he was addicted to crack, that's his mess to clean up. He's a grown man. He chose to pick up the crack pipe. Coddling him is not the responsibility of the state. It's pathetic that some people see this guy as some sort of innocent victim. I agree that it's unfortunate, but trying to turn him into some kind of martyr is ridiculous.

And you've got to be smoking crack yourself if you honestly think this guy should have been given money. What do you think he would have spent it on? MORE CRACK! Homeless crack addicts aren't exactly known for being responsible with money. That's why they're homeless crack addicts.

These people need rehabilitation, not prison.

Or firing squads if you want to keep prison costs low.

You want to lock up a guy for life when he didn't harm a single person, and only broke into the place because he was hungry?

Good grief. No wonder your jails are so overcrowded.

Instead of enforcing our own laws, I guess we should send all of our career theives to these wonderful countries where theft is apparently not illegal. Everyone wins.

He didn't hurt anyone, he didn't kill anyone, he didn't rape anyone, so who the heck thinks he should have been jailed for life?
