So a child makes the decison to become unhealthy because their parents make them eat unhealthy foods?

Parents are responsible for their children. That has nothing to do with McDonald's.

The government through the 1st lady in this case isn't telling anyone what to do. Just as previous 1st ladies didn't tell you to stay off drugs, learn to read, plant flowers in public spaces, they suggested it. The fact that Michelle is getting so much flack for something so innocuous as kids eating healthier is telling of how spitefully partisan this nation has become.

She has been completely irresponsible. Americans should be allowed to eat themselves into early graves.

It's in the Constitution or the Weight Watchers' Guide or something.

I didn't say anything about macdonalds...I said that a parent who knowingly makes their child unhealthy is pisspoor excuse for a parent.

I agree. I don't think that has anything to do with my post you responded to.

Right, my original post was a response to a comment about McDonald's. That post stands.

Just as we all have the right to be illiterate, get totally bleep faced on booze, not donate to polio research, do illegal drugs (till you get caught), not plant flowers on the highway..... or the number of other things 1st ladies have advocated for/against in the nations history. This is just the first pet project I recall a first lady getting so much stupid backlash over.... get them tubby kids to the husky section and fight any commie gobment attempt to slim them up? Umm priorities people.

Carbs in a heathy balanced diet are vital.

Not really. Carnivorous animals do without them altogether except occasionally ingesting a little grass to help with digestion. The "you die without sugar" comment is based on ignorance of body chemistry. Protein is converted to sugar by the liver, and the advantage is that the liver only produces the amount needed for brain activity and a few other functions. We take in far too much sugar and complex carbs in our diet, far more than we need. A ketogenic diet, such as championed by Dr. Atkins, is a healthy corrective diet that reduces body fat by restricting the very thing that makes us fat, blood glucose.

Great post. Studies show that children under 2 will crave their entire life, what they eat up until that age.

Republicans didn't do anything about the illegal immigrants that were already in America under Bush when he had the house and senate. Republicans have turned into a "No action all pessamist" group. None of them will do or say anyting to make America better but they will talk HOURLY about how someone else is stupid. Most of America learned this was "immature" when they were 10 years old. The Right has some good idea's but they are lost today.

Vitamin A and D actually. Cod liver oil has long been a suppliment to combat Vitamin D deficiency and rickets.

I don't think that it would much help the truly sedentary but it would be especially useful for those who cannot put a lot of stress on their body from rigorous activity.

Carbs are unhealthy? Care to try again?

It's highly unlikely that parent's are forcing their children to eat unhealthy, rather parents are to dumb, lazy, or liberal in the act of parenting to keep their children on a balanced diet. Quite frankly some conservatives see this as a belief that the government should tell us what to eat, the government has already made attempts to prohibit fresh unprocessed produce. Quit trying to make it seem as though healthy living is a political topic.

when i was in high school i ate Mcdonalds like every other day and i wasnt fat at all. then again i was playing 3 different sports and stayed in the weight room or did cardio training on the football field.

last year i weighed a whopping 275lbs., most ive ever weighed. now im down to 212 and almost got my high school build back, about 15 more pounds left to lose total. guess what, i still eat mcdonalds lol. not as much though but i still get my fast food fix.

the key is more of how active you stay, not really what you eat. for us older folk it is hard to maintain our weight and build, but the rules still apply.

kids just need to play outside more, technology is killing that.

I'm 1.82 metres tall and sit around 84-86 kilos, the heaviest I've been is 88 kilos. I've been this weight since my late teens, I'm now 57 years of age. I rarely eat fast foods and 90% of my diet is home cooked. I used to play heaps of sport (surfing and Rugby) but in the last 15 years or so I've slowed down, although I walk daily. I also watch my alcohol intake but enjoy a cold beer on a hot day or a wine in the evening. Most times, I'd rather drink coffee than alcohol but I hardly drink instant coffee. I prefer the real stuff.

Maintaining weight, what you eat is important. Also when you eat is important. I have a good breakfast and my main meal of the day is in the middle of the day. Evenings, I only have a snack. A couple of pieces of toast (or the like), fruit with yogurt etc with a cup of tea (sometimes a glass of wine). This has been my routine for atleast 15 years.

The problem with Obeisty is almost always quantity not quality. And lack of exercise.

It's very much a political topic. With crony capitalism, the processed-food-industrial complex works hand in hand with government to control as much as possible what you eat. Guidelines from the FDA are influenced by companies like Monsanto and Dow. What doctors tell you about nutrition is approved by government and those who offer alternatives may face licensing issues. Farmers and producers of organic foods face regulatory hurdles and sometimes even criminal charges for doing what they do.

Parents aren't stupid, dumb or lazy. You'll find that most food for kids is labelled "healthy" or "low fat" or some other FDA-approved lie.

Everything that government nationalizes becomes a political issue. Justice, education, money, healthcare, and, eventually, food.

It's about healthcare. Fat people drive up costs for all of us in the private and public insurance market. Time for that to end.
