Once we get back in power we will have our vengeance. We will expand the refugee program to levels that will make Obama look anti-immigrant. We will open the floodgates to the border with regular legal immigration, and neglect to enforce the illegal immigration. Then we will grant amnesty, and legalize all 20 million (could be even 40+ million by then who knows).

The new Americans will disperse across the US to states like AZ, TX, NV, Florida, North Carolina. They will even get placed in states like Wisconsin, as punishment for electing Trump.

With one democrat president we will flip potentially between 3-5 states permanently blue. And just like that we will secure permanent power. Republicans will be lucky to ever break 150 electoral votes. And from there on out it will only get worse for them and they will only become more irrelevant.

I think there are a number of reasons why this will not happen:

• The GOP now has a lock on SCOTUS which means that their gerrymandering and voter suppression tactics will become increasingly effective. At the moment, the GOP enjoys a 7%-10% advantage as a result of these two things (so in order to get equal representation, the Democrats need to have a 7%-10% advantage in the polls), this will likely grow. In other words, even with, say, 35%-40% of the votes, the GOP will be able to get more than 50% of the representatives
• The GOP will still be the biggest single voting bloc. Even though they may have around 40% support, no other group will be able to get a similar level of support. The 60% who don't support the GOP are spread all over the political spectrum and so no one candidate can hope to appeal to all of them
• GOP voters are very good at going out and voting, the same is not necessarily true for everyone else. Even if there are millions more new citizens, there's no guarantee that they'll be able to vote (due to voter suppression), actually turn out to vote, or vote Democrat

In a first past the post system, any party that can reliably get close to 40% support stands a very good chance at remaining in power. As old white men (and women) feel increasingly marginalised by all the scary brown people they see all around them support for the GOP will concentrate.

For sure, decades down the road perhaps the GOP will find itself marginalised unless it tries to court other demographics but I don't see it happening in the lifetime of anyone posting on this board.

But one reason she didn't win was because it was fairly evident that the Left did intend just that sort of future for this nation. Everything they do always points in that general direction anyway.

I don't think you're taking into consideration the disgust many Americans have for both major parties. You're also not taking into account the rise in the independent voter who has deserted both parties, who are mad at each party. In 2006 36% of Americans identified themselves as democrats, 31% as republicans and 30% as independents. Today, 2018 28% identify with the Democratic Party, 26% with the Republican Party and 43% as independents. Fed up with both major parties.

Since the Democratic is still the larger party, Democrats having a slightly higher favorable rating among all adults isn't that surprising. But among swing voters, independents, the less partisan and non-affiliated. There is no love for either party. For the Democratic Party to be successful, they have to come close to a split of the independent vote. They can't afford to lose independents by more than a couple of points. Just look back on 2016 when independents went for Trump 46-42 over Hillary Clinton. Independents gave Trump the White House. Not Republicans, not democrats.

As long as our two major parties continue to move to the extreme right and extreme left, independents will continue to grow. Both major parties have discarded those in the middle, moderates, the center, center left and center right of our political spectrum in favor of ultra extremist of left vs. right.

The key to political success, long term is convincing independents that your party is for them. Not continuing to discard and ignoring them. But you do, our two major parties have a monopoly on our two party electoral system. They write our election laws and do so as a mutual protection act. If there is one thing both Republicans and Democrats agree on, is that no viable third party will ever arise.

so what do independents do being expelled from both parties by their extremist ideology. Vote one party in one election, vote them out the next, followed by voting them back in, etc. Perhaps along the way a common sense political party will arise to represent middle America instead of just the fringes.
