The United States Of Deceit

A hard foul can also win the game. I did not grow up watching team sports and don't watch them now. I do enjoy motorsports. I don't think they figured out how to cheat in MotoGP.

 

Personally, I find sports to be akin to sex... GREAT to DO... not so much to watch. But the value of sports to young and adolescent guys and gals should not be underestimated. As MacArthur so succinctly put it: "Upon the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that, upon other fields, on other days, will bear the fruits of victory".

 

That may be why, until relatively recently, Americans knew that all government was "at best a necessary evil".

 

Yeah...it didn't take long for TSHTF after letting that genie out, that's for sure.

 

After taking a quick poll of the 4,000,000,000 or so guys around the world, I found three other guys who agree with you!

 

I bet you allowed early voting, mail-in voting, voting without ID, "vote harvesting", and allowed illegals to vote

 

And the search for a lesser inherent evil continues.

 

For all the things you could call prof athletes out for, you choose lying (or drawing a penalty, which is part of the strategy of the sport)? And of all liars you choose as bad role models for children, again you choose athletes?

 

Man, in his group form [except the family (and on rare occasions, community)], ALWAYS uses collective power to exploit other individuals. It is the bane of our existence [other than everything else ;].

 

Even Marx, Lenin and the American Founders agreed on that much.

 

GO ARMY!! BEAT NAVY!!

 

I pay very little attention to sports, but I think it’s more foundational than that. We have a society that values material achievement over things like honor and integrity. Sports are more likely to be a reflection of that than a cause of it. If there’s a root cause, it’s corporations doing everything they can to maximize consumption.

 

When I have brought this up to people over the years, most people think I am being ridiculous. They believe this behavior is perfectly fine which I believe is the way they rationalize their own behavior.

I suspect this type of deceit is part of the "equal amount of good and bad in everything" idea. The system that has produced an incredible bounty for billions has also stoked the flames of dishonor and a drive among the most unbalanced among us for success at nearly any cost.

Just like the American people are [deep down] relieved that it is us who can vaporize any potential adversary, they accept lying as a cost of doing business [as it allows them to do the same without as much guilt]. Another example is how porn is available to pretty much anybody [and we all know why]. Future generations will judge us harshly for allowing this to occur as giving into one's base desires on this type of scale ends poorly.
