No money and a President who is increasingly unpopular and paranoid .
What has fate in store for our Ukie friends ?
Will Putrid , the big bad Wolf , gobble them up as increasingly the EU rejects Yanukovych ?
Three events in 2012 will lead to a further deterioration in Ukraine’s relations with the West. In the spring, the European Court on Human Rights (ECHR) will rule on the Tymoshenko case, most probably demanding her release. Yanukovych will not implement the ECHR ruling even though they are compulsory for member states.
The Euro-2012 football championship over the summer will be accompanied by political demonstrations.
Finally, with collapsing popularity for Yanukovych and the Party of Regions, the October elections are inevitably going to be falsified leading to mass protests.
    Another Orange revolution ?

The singing is fine , but how do you think they were betrayed ?
    I missed that bit?
I felt that Yuschenko and Timoschenko were their own worst enemies --- perceived as corrupt ( OK who isn't there) and more interested in settling personal grudges and battles .
    What could the EU do?

Don't dismiss the Ukraine. The Ukraine is one of the 3 Slavonic states that are not yet overtaken by sinister populous "democratic" movements.

But if you must see the end of the Ukraine, then a few earlier posts at PF may give some unofficial/undoctored insight. Poptap pointed out a long time ago that the Ukraine is made of 3 major constituent sub-nations, the East Ukrainians who are like Russians, the Gallicians who are ultra-nationalistic Europe-friendly westerners in Lviv, and the Zakarpathie Ukrainians.

I spoke with 2 Ukrainian immigrants in the US, and they both said independently, that "a border between western Ukraine and eastern Ukraine would be a very(!) good idea", and that Zakarpathie has its own Ukrainian people.

So, if the current East European state fragmentation trends continue, we will now see 3 Ukraines in the future. I think it's not bad at all, except maybe that this will add more racist neo-nazi type states on the map that derive their existence from being anti-Polish or anti-Hungarian.

I have visited many times and noticed myself this big difference between the East --- I have only been to Kharkiv, Dnepopetrovosk and Donetsk ---- and the remainder --- Odessa and Kiev many times but not Lyiv yet .
There is a lot of industrial strength in the East which is the Yanukovich power base but there is also a lot of old fashioned Communist thinking and no real understanding of what is happening in the wider world .
    A bit like America !!!!!!!
And women from Odessa and that Oblast are the most beautiful in the world , though increasingly the younger generation are becoming Barbie tainted and look and dress identically , just as per the bigger Russian Cities .
Sad . An era is drawing to an end .

So I am to blame for having at least three holidays a year ?
On Wednesday I fly to Palermo and move over to the East Coast for around 10 days .
Do you think I get all my detailed knowledge from Russia Today ?
I think that travelling far away from Smolensk would be good for you .Come to Team GB for our Olympics --- the treat of your life .

Agreed, the western backed "orange" revolution was a failure. Hopefully they seek ties to prosperous nations, not those that are decaying in debt. *wink

Why is Russia not an option for the Ukraine? Isn't Russia a more resourceful economy these days than the EU countries?

It would be interesting to know how much support Ukrainians have for Russia as opposed to western Europe or the Balkans. Is there a Ukrainian at Political Forum, who has information?

You guys are unbelievable . Which island in the sky do you all live on ?
Eastern Russia is still strongly tied to Russia and it is possible that at some time it could become a separate and independent state . The West is much more EU aligned and however badly EZ countries are doing , the stronger and larger economies are light years ahead of Ukraine both in terms of infrastructure and overall prosperity .
And don't think Russia is somehow a possible saviour . Sure the greedy dwarf would love to get it back in his control , but Russia has huge economic problems which are directly linked to EZ fortunes .
If the EZ goes under ( definite) and the oil price drops heavily later in the year , Russia is in big trouble

VERY interesting. Looks like 2009 was an anti-Russian year in the Ukraine, but before and after that, Ukrainians like Russians a lot. So my guess was correct, the best choice for Ukrainians is to side with Russia instead of Europe, like Belarus sided with Russia instead of Europe.

By east Russia, do you mean Siberia?

Since they are only 30 million people out of the 130 million Russians, and Siberia is 3 times the size of Europe with all resources imaginable, I am surprised why Siberians haven't already claimed Siberia for themselves and stop sharing it with European Russia.

As for the EZ, Russia can sell oil to China, and China is building its domestic consumption so it gets less hit by any western collapse.

Ukrainians have a well relations to Russian it's true. We in Russia when the summer and hot, our people rest in Ukraine. And there are no problems.
    Well,this is just an example.
The best choice of Ukrainians is Russia, they need to think about the future and not about the instantaneous desires.
