Sadly, I think it's going to take something like a mushroom cloud over a Ukrainian city for any NATO countries to get involved militarily in Ukraine. For all the sympathy dead civilians might garner, most countries just do not seem interested in a potentially-nuclear confrontation with Russia over it.

Starting a nuclear war over Ukraine is very much a nonsensical choice. Anyone reasonable would try to avoid it.

If true, then Ukraine either capitulates to Russia now, or it capitulates to Russia later after many more people die and Ukraine is 'demilitarized' by Russia annihilating all of its military... The Ukrainian military can't hold out forever. Russia wins if its simply a matter of attrition.

Can't say Americans weren't warned to ****... but it sounds like this guy was in Ukraine for non-selfish reasons...

    SNIP
Hill's Facebook profile identified him as a teacher at universities in Kyiv and Warsaw. He previously said on Facebook that he was in Chernihiv with his partner for her to receive medical treatment. He was a native of Minnesota.
    ENDSNIP

    https://www.reuters.com/world/us-citizen-killed-ukraine-blinken-says-2022-03-17/

I'm sort of assuming his partner is a non-American, so I can understand him not leaving...

Sad.... that people would try to use a thread like this to take swings (and misses) at our President...

but most civilians killed in Ukraine were not doing that. Putin is exacting revenge upon the unarmed women and children for what the armed civilians have done in Ukraine’s defense

You have to defend against HIS objectives and HIS tactics not yours. Static defense when out with WW1 and the fall France in the beginning of WW2.

Ukraine, with what we have seen, could have stopped Russia in the contested provinces had they been properly armed in the weeks leading up to the invasion. If there is anything to the positive about this is that we have seen first hand the capabilities of the Russian army and it is FAR less than we ever imagined. I have war gamed since I was a kid in the back yard making sand tables and using miniatures. All the authors of these games using the best knowledge available don't let you set the balance to this level. Russia is always considered a well trained, highly motivated force.

\And yes it is also a factor of the unbelievable performance of not just the Ukraine military leadership and forces but the DAMN citizens showing such courage and ability.

I think Putin has been totally blindside by both, the apparent ineptitude of his forces and the bravery of the Ukraine's and their leadership. And you betcha even elite forces would find the ongoing EXTEMELY costly as it enters urban warfare where every block, every building, every yard cost you lives and supplies. These are conscripts who just want to go home and know they have been lied to and do not trust their leadership. In war gaming, that's about a -5 on your troop morale meaning they are about to break.

Bullocks .. civilians get killed in war .. don't hear you crying for all the civilians killed by the US in the various wars over the last 40 years... or 10 years for that matter... Putin by comparison is being quite careful

As soon as the tables are turned you cry out "Human sheilds" but shoe on other foot and a different story comes out.

If Russian economy is strangled by the rest of the world as Ukraine’s is propped up then the Russians means of launching offensive operations may wilt before Ukraine’s military does.

Putin good, America bad? The USA was much more careful to avoid collateral damage than Russia. To Russia the collateral damage is their primary intent

Really .. and who told you that .. The Propaganda central Pentagon ?

    A) The Pentagon invented the term "Collateral Damage" precisely to justify its wanton intentional killing of civilians ..
    B) The "primary intent" claim is pure unadulterated historically false nonsense. talk about "Necessary Illusion" central .. and you got it bad.

    A) how many dead civilians in the Iraq War ... estimates are from 150,000 on the low end .. to over 1 million on the high end .. 450,000 in the middle. Let me know when we get to 100,000 civilians dead in Ukraine .. we will be 20% of the way for what your beloved Obama/Biden's "JV" team did in Syria

There's 2 wars - near a million dead civilians .. and were just getting started.. Got any Serbians in your neighborhood ? .. also an Eastern European Nation I might add .. meaning they count for more than the "Sand Dwellers" like the Ukrainians .. hospitals .. schools you name it ..
Ever seen a before and after pic of Raqqa .. opps sorry .. we don't care about the Sand Dwellers .. well .. much.

Oh and lest we forget Yemen .. ICC already tarred the Biden/Bama team with complicity in War Crimes .. Each and every one of these.. way nastier than anything Putin has done .. with the possible exception of Serbia .. that only being slightly worse than Putins deeds

"Avoiding Collateral Damage" .. Get Serious .. reality is a tad bit different than the Pentagon Bed-Time story.

    B) have a look at before and after pics of some of the cities Liberated from the Islamic State by Russia ... Russia going far out of its way to avoid civilian casualties in Ukraine .. this is kid gloves vs a sledgehammer.

    C) To your credit you at least attempted a response .. - mostly getting emogies .. no content .. folks can't even bear to respond . .. interestingly .. I am pissing off both the Left and the Right .. while perhaps not equally .. Blue being the more pissed off of the 2.. plenty o Red as well.

    D) Putin doesn't even come close to the atrocity leveled on civilians by USA ... a fraction of a rounding error. And thats the historical fact jack.

Lol…trump’s obsequious support of putin sounds more treasonous each day, don’t it? Putin labelled any Russian that sides with the west as a traitor.
When are you people going to hold trump to account?

A bunch of Nonsense .. Trump has never supported Putin in any material way. Admiring one's opponents skill is what smart people do .. learn from their moves .. so as to be able to counter them. The idiot lives in denial .. not learning anything .. does not see the position on the board for what it is .. and thus continually blunders.

Now if we went to talk supporting Nasty Scum .. Obama-Biden .. Their favorite Patron Saint .. to which massive donations were made .. Al Qaeda and ISIS .. now .. Talk about "Traitor" Arming the 911 terrorists .. with sophisticated US technology.. while claiming to be fighting Islamist extremism..

Drink it down SJ .. that propaganda kool-aid :)

Since when is the Truth .. simple Historial Reality .. "Anti -American" ohhh .. right the Authoritarian blue wave .. cancel culture .. anything that conflicts with necessary illusion bubble .. and/or State Sponsored Propaganda .. thats the new Patriotism .. begging . on bended knee to give up liberty for a temporary moment of political bandwagon fear driven euphoria . and fallacious Utilitarianism..

Yes . crisis brings out the true colors .. the raging neocon's of yesturday .. now blathering peaceniks all of a sudden .. in hypocritical Bliss.while apologizing for Atrocity .. then projecting sad state onto others.

So mate .. What was it you found so "Anti-American" .. so caught up in your name calling .. you forgot to mention it .. nor state how this is not a "Real merican" .. what a joke..

Its your turn .. I love handing it to AINOs .. lets see where the true colors lie .. don't delay now :)

Lol…your quick descent into qanon nonsense makes me suspect your notions of the truth.
Nobody who is honest about history would dispute that America has committed terrible sins, but you fail to grasp that the putin apologists who are trying to put the focus on America’s past rather than putin’s present are becoming more and more repellent to anyone watching what is going on.
Despite our sins, I would put our basic western values way ahead of putin’s ideology. That’s why all the world’s migrants and refugees want to go to an open democratic society rather than putin’s Russia or China or any of the other repressive states in the world.

Ehm.....yes, the Russians are attacking the cities, and the Ukrainians are defending the cities. The Russians don't chase people around the country side, they want the cities.

The US citizen who died was a civilian who was standing in a soup line. He had stayed in Ukraine to take care of his sick 'partner'.

I don't understand, shouldn't the Russians focus primarily on military targets then, since they should be more lightly defended than the civilian areas?

Well, if you're referring to the "UN" in the post, I've explained twice that I meant to put "NATO" there.
Glad to be a source of entertainment for you!

Not particularly, but I'll concede that my position on this has some nuance. It's probably not something I could discuss candidly on this board without getting a warning from the mods though.

Trump supported Putin by doubling down on the sanctions previously in place against him and Russia. He supported Putin by cutting off the natural gas pipeline. He supported Putin by guilt tripping other NATO nations into increasing their defense spending to oppose Russia. He supported Russia by giving Ukraine lethal military aid they could use on Russian invaders. He supported Putin by providing LNG to previous Russian energy clients.

Ukraine has opted for a 'Stalingrad' type of war as opposed to meeting the Russians on a front. This is why Russia's blitz strategy failed to achieve a quick victory.

Strategically, its a smart move. Its just that the media tends to gloss over it in attempt to portray the Russians as attacking civilians for no reason...

There was no option. Russians blitzed straight for the cities so there was no front

Please explain the reason to bomb schools and hospitals.
