I took a class like this in college, it was called "Film Appreciation" it satisfied 3 units and all it required was one night a week for all of us to gather in the on campus theater, watch soft French porn followed by a few minutes of the professor blathering on about the "deeper meaning" of it all. My girlfriend and I made it one of our weekly date nights. We found it beneficial.

For Sociology students-- it probably should have, if it didn't (though I'm sure porn has been studied, by scientists of probably multiple disciplines).

Film class according to the article. There are classes on how to incorporate Shakespeare into film or the use of human psychology into horror films, and a few others out there. But this is a private college, is it not? So, I don't understand what's your beef here?

From the article, it looks like an advanced class, a junior-level class, which means, film majors under a BFA degree.

    1) Your reply suggests that you did not grasp that my comment had been meant as, what is known as, irony (even if its comedic element fell flat). Your taking a stand, then, against "run(ning) experiments" on people, without their consent, was completely unnecessary.

    2) Your are actually incorrect, that sociologists cannot, in their research, monitor people's actions, in the public sphere. Whether or not they are crossing any lines, would be dependent upon the particulars of any given experiment.

    3) That we don't "allow researchers" to do it, notwithstanding, you are probably aware that our own government has conducted experiments on the unwitting public, from injecting radioactive materials into the placenta of pregnant women, to giving fake treatments to black men who were known to have syphilis, to "dosing," unsuspecting citizens with LSD, before this substance was generally known. So offering a class for people to sign up and watch porn, would certainly fall on the low end of the grievance scale, of researcher offenses.

Yes, but this is a private college receiving zero public funding. The GOP is irrelevant.

Scientists don't need to partake in the things they study. If they were to study illegal drug use, they would study the effects on animals and in society through interviews and exams, collect data and interpret results.
Engaging in the study by taking the drugs is poor science and morals and can have strong consequences.

Yours is a specious analogy. Drugs most certainly ARE studied directly, not by ingestion, but by chemical analysis. There is no way, however, to determine what is in "porn," without watching it.

Not by the ones doing the research and it would be immoral to have people take illegal drugs just to study the effects it has on them, family, culture etc...

The researchers are the test subjects. This is just an excuse to normalize bad and unhealthy behavior for hedonistic pleasure at the cost of taxpayers.

That **** needs to be shut down. It's just a money making course for gullible students.

Nothing of value will be learned. It's garbage.

No, you are ignoring the facts, and trying to make equivalences, where none exists. In social science, one needs to have more of a first hand understanding of one's subject. This is inapplicable, to being able to merely state that nicotine is addictive (for which we have ample evidence). You clearly just have no understanding of cultural studies: the goal is not to come out with a blanket statement, like "porn is addictive;" it is to gain insight into the culture. It is the difference between knowing the physiological effects of some chemical, versus figuring out why people take drugs, and understanding how they use them.

Are students paying tuition for this gibberish? Yes or no? If it's no, then I could care less. If it's yes. Then it's a waste of money/money grab and should be squashed.

I can watch all the porn I want on my phone for free.... At least after I pay the monthly bill which is a lot less than tuition.

But then again your phone will get digital herpes and that's why you have a girlfriend!

It's like watching sports. It's one hell of a lot more boring to be a spectator than it is to participate!

I guess this just proves that a sucker is born every minute and a fool and his money is soon parted!

~ Instead of pornography , I suggest the class have group therapy — including the teacher .

Seriously..... Porn is pretty boring. It was okay when you're 14 but when you're a grown up you make your own p***! At least if you have any sort of normal life.

I think the purpose of that is to try and legitimize it as film

When you lie down with dogs, you wake up with fleas. The toxins always negatively impact those in close proximity ... ALWAYS.

And the only ignorance in this scenario is that which assumes no harm will be done. That's a profound kind of naivety.

It only affects those who watch it.

And how in hell does this need explaining?

These photos lack context. Looks like he's at a party the image behind him appears to have Ques'e on a television screen. It's likely a public place. I couldn't figure out what Ques'e means.

But I've run across many guys that put on women's clothing for laughs.

So I'm not sure this is anything but harmless.

Porn can be addictive and psychologically damaging especially for youg men.

It's immoral to do research in such a manner.

Indeed. All you can tell by this is what he was wearing and that he was having a drink.

What's wrong with a guy wearing lingerie in the first place?
