I read a Pew finding that about 4 out of 10 people think that Islam promotes violence. However, finding stats that back up this way of thinking is much harder to find. Can anyone find these stats or is this way of thinking misplaced?
Considering recent terrorist acts, like setting off shrapnel bombs in Boston and butchering a soldier in the streets of London, you certainly can't say that some strains of Islam don't promote violence. Terrorist acts are evidence in and of themselves of the violent branch of Islam.
What kind of stats are you looking for? I would suggest reading the sources (Quran, Hadiths). This site has provided a list of the violent passages and the passages that support forced conversion
I dont think its an issue that can be defined by statistics. How many acts of terror have been played out in the last 12 years and who did them. How about that stat?
Every time I see an Islamist shriek "Allah Akbar" after they have filled a room full of bullets, or right before they blow themselves up in order to murder a crowd of people, is all the stats I need.

I remember a post here some time ago that put it well: When Christians commit violence it is against their religion, when Muslims commit violence it is at the command of their religion.
An example of this please, and mind you I will call you on it if it is a politicised Christianity citation. ALL religions are bad when they are politicised. I will add that politics without religious (Atheist) perspective is equally bad.

Why would there not be a study if about half of those polled think that Islam is so closely tied with violence and terrorism?
