    You are correct, Phoebe Bump.

We have a constitutional republic. However, a constitutional republic is not the "antithesis" of a democracy.

In a true democracy, the people vote on the laws brought before Congress. In a constitutional republic, the people who represent us vote on the laws brought before Congress.

The concepts are very similar; however, our founding fathers chose not to go with a true democracy, which often can result in nothing more than "mob" rule.

The foolish Democrats are debt addicts and just don't know when to stop spending! With the Federal debt of $14.3 trillion amounting to $185,000 for every family of four, at some point we have to concede that the federal checkbook has its limits. Cuts in spending are only a start, other programs need to be abolished or radically changed. ... The old guard Democrats and old guard Republicans have been in Congress far too long. They are too beholden to special interest groups to have the good of average, typical Americans in mind.

What we have is the antithesis of democracy because of the Senate. Those in the larger states are SEVERELY under-represented in DC due to the Senate. Under-representation is the antithesis of democracy. What we have is a monarcy (with dukes and duchesses but without the titles), which was about as far as the founding fathers were willing to go.

You are very mistaken, Phoebe Bump.

Barack Obama has been our president for 32 months. Very soon it will be three years. He now "owns" this economy. He can no longer blame George Bush and the Republicans for his mistakes.

We can thank Obama’s inattention to the debt crisis for these latest salvos against our 401 (k) savings plans! If the carnage continues to occur on Wall Street, no one will have any money left to spend and invest and help the economy to grow and put unemployed Americans back to work!

Yes, these rioters are "mindless", uneducated and lack social morals, that's what the right-winged newspapers in Britain (England and Scotland) are saying.

So why didn't this rioting happen in Scotland. Simple, we have a good education system. We do not pay to go to college or university. The young people of Scotland have hope for the future as we have access to education. However the people of England have had this access to further education axed by the low taxes, high cutting Con-Dem government.

There is no employment available to people without A-Levels or a university degree. So what is there to do but join a gang, at least they provide a form of education (how to loot and steal in three easy steps) and show what this word "respect" means. It might not be my knowledge of this word means or many of my free educated peers in Scotland and paid educated peers in England have. However these gangs help provide what these young people see as being successful these days. Having the bling-bling of celeb world.

Now there is jokes on facebook on the type of shops targeted by these "thugs" - how many of them didn't loot the bookstore Waterstones but did loot JD Sports and the electrical retailer Currys.

Now how many people in celeb's world read a book? I really don't see Paris Hilton carrying a copy of War and Peace along side her dog. Katie "Jordon" Price wrote (with a shadow writer) a few novels but I don't see Daniel Radcliffe or Kristen Steward starring in a film based on these novels (but I do see the porn version being made).

However you do see celebs wearing McKenzie tracksuits, addidas baseball caps while watching other celeb's "cribs" on MTV+1 HD 3D with smell-a-vision.

Because the only way for them to be successful is not via the educational system - they have little chance of becoming doctors, lawyers or the CEO of BP. But to become a celeb, winning X-Factor, rapping about drugs and crime, being a glamour model, becoming a footballer's wife or appearing on Big Brother.

People with no hope will always fight back.

Sokkos, why do you defend the conduct of these young thugs?

The truth is this mess was created by a very permissive society and an overly liberal "nanny" state in which these young people all feel "entitled" to take whatever they want!

Al least that is the way the black mayor of Philadelphia sees it. Here is what he had to say about the conduct of these people.
